When using a mono leader on tip-ups
« on: Feb 06, 2010, 08:15 AM »
Do you guys have problems with pike hitting your minnows instead of walleye? If you do do you get a lot of break-offs from their teeth?

I normally run 40lb braid right to my hook for pike, they aren't line shy, but I am going on a walleye trip next week and want to rig them up with a flouro leader, probably 10lb? I'd still like to be able to catch pike too if they happen to take the bait before Mr. Wally comes along.

 Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

10 lb flouro is IMO about the perfect leader for what you want.  I use the same, its invisible, plus a little more abrasive resistant for the occasional pike as well, even though they can bite threw it too, its a little harder for them than mono.

I agree with Master Angler.

I use #10 lb Berkley Transition, and two treble hooks for my quick strike rig.

After you land your pike, check your leader for nicks.  replace as necessary.

I usually have a dozen or more leaders ready before I go fishing.  It saves time when the bite is on.

Hope this helps,

I have always used 30lb mono and caught quite a few Walleye and Pike.  Never had a problem with Walleye shying away from it. Well not the ones i caught anyways. I just switched to 30lb flouroclear by P Line. We'll see how i do.

How do you tie your mono to the braided for a leader? I can't seem to get a knot that holds.  :-\

Best knot for joining braid to mono/floro is the uni to uni knot........

An Albright knot or a nail knot, would be my choices.

I usually just tie to a swivel with an improved clinch knot.

Here's a website that may help you.

I saved the website, it has enough information to give you hours of enjoyment.

Hope this helps,
