Yes Clam is updating their website. Tomorrow is the pro day (virtual this year and not in person) that wraps up at about noon so once that is done the web site should be back up and running. there is a few new products that will be big hits with some and some new stuff that other companies haven't made or no longer make (more on this tomorrow) but Clam is now. there is a couple one season only items but once I can talk about them you will understand why I say one season only. You will probably see the new stuff once the site is back up I probably won't be able to answer questions on the new stuff until I get home later in the evening as I will be busy helping a friend in the afternoon after the pro day wraps up and then once I get home I will jump on here and answer any question anyone may have about the new stuff.

as of now most things have showed up on time and there will be a chance that retailers will be putting out ice fishing stuff sooner then later but will be up to the individual retailers as to when they set their ice fishing stuff out. Heard today that Scheels in Fargo, ND is suppose to have ice fishing stuff out already. just a heads up if anyone is interested in the 40th anniversary houses get them right away because once they sell out they will not be no more offered.

Monticatgeek, what is the metal rail for on the hub shelf? It doesn't really say on Clams website. I thought it was a magnet at first while looking at it on my phone earlier, but now that I can get a bit of a closer look, it looks a little like the t-bolt tracks used for mounting things on kayaks.

that is a magnet. you can put jig hooks on it to hold them and then you also have the two small round holes in front of that where you could put like a small forceps for removing hooks or if they are too big to fit in one of those two hole you can use the longer oblong one. then of course you have the large cup/hole for holding a drink or this is where you could set a cell phone in too. these along with the hub rattle reels and rod holders are going to take fishing out of a hub to the next leave. I will be personally adding this stuff to one of my hubs if not all of them this year.

I like that they sell the mounting discs separate so you can say mount a few in different places and move whatever you are using to suit your needs.

Checked into that Marcum link and noticed the Pursuit.  Saw that they had a cable reel system.  Asked if there is the chance that it would fit on the Recon system and they said no.  They said that there is a 1/4-20 stud on it, and the recon has a threaded hole for 1/4-20 - so not sure why it wouldn't work, or could be rigged.

That is my one complaint about these - really wish they had the reel system.  I may have to look into the threads to find the one where someone here came up with a work around.

The way I see it:

The reel already comes with the stud, and the recon already has the threaded hole, so its just the reel system that we would need.  So sitting here thinking - do you need to be concerned about the end of the cable being twisted.  Am I over thinking this?

I can give more details about what I am talking about after noon tomorrow. there is stuff I will be running this year and am looking forward to it. there is also a couple special items that are coming out that will be a one season only deal more on that tomorrow too.

so most of you have had a chance to check out the Clam web site by now and have seen the new stuff for this year. so when I said there was going to be a few one season only items I was referring to the 3 40th Anniversary Fish Traps. I am personally thinking of picking up one of the anniversary Scout XL's and just keeping it as a collectors item. as for them being the white tents that was done to create the retro look of Dave Genz's first Fish Trap he sold to the public back in 1980. The red accent on it does help with the visiblity issue when the snow is blowing plus as you can see there was a safety flag added to it. so some of the other stuff I will be using this year will be the new gold colored mono line. I was able to test a spool of it out late year and I really liked how it helped with being able to tie the different knots. with clear mono I have a hard time seeing the line sometimes and with having the gold coloring now helps fix that issue for me. next biggest things I am looking to try this up coming season is the new hub accessories. Really like the option of having the shelf or the rod holder or the rattle reels for the hubs now. only thing I would like to see added to this is a variation of the rattle reel where it can be placed on the hub of the roof instead of the wall of the hub so a person could hook a spearing decoy to it. I am planning to talk with the R&D guys and suggest this. it would just be a matter of adding one more bend to the mounting arm to be able to do this so the reel sits in the right direction. Another thing that I am rally looking forward to is the new cover that fits over the drill plate and drill. what I have done the past couple season was to put a cover from a gas auger over it but now it is nice to have a actual cover made specifically for the drill and drill plate. anonther drill relate thing I am looking to try out is the new gear box. yes I will be the first to say that mistakes were made with the first gear box a couple years back but this new one is all together different in that the design is totally different and the interal parts are beefier. only potential negative to the new gear box is that it will be slow turning but will have way more torque. the ratio is like 3.6 to 1. As for new tackle items I think the new Tikka Mino will be a big hit this year since it is a one piece design made from zinc and not lead so this is a plus if you have to use only lead free tackle in your area. the other big plus for it is the fact that the fins on it are not plastic like the ripping raps. It would take a lot to break off a fin on one of the Tikka's

Here's something for those that are running the sonar/gps units on the blue boxes that want more run time out of
your units. It extends your blue box to fit the wider 12v 18ah batteries.

I was at the Catch Cover office where the guys were making prototypes of their sleeve cover years ago. The unit like Svens was the first prototype, they look great and super easy to make, but they did not allow for adequate airflow and holes froze over too fast. I will stay with my Catch Cover ones.

Looks like Striker Ice is adding a line cutter to the zipper pull

                                                          From SI on FB
We are very excited to team up with Line Cutterz, LLC. to bring ice anglers something never seen before on ice fishing apparel - a built-in Zipper Pull!

As seen on Shark Tank and already popular among open water anglers across the U.S. - this zipper pull quickly and conveniently cuts through any monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided line like a knife through butter.

It's included on our brand new Hardwater Jacket and Bib, Climate Stryk Jacket, Predator Stryk Jacket, and Women's Prism Jacket. Bring on the ice!

I own a Fish Scout 800. Besides the IR lights (mine is LED) if I heard him right, he said that cable is 90ft, I believe mine is 60ft. I don't see any other differences.

Thankfully I have seen a couple places now at the $150 price point for just the heater and $70 for the cooker. Just wondering is they have MAP pricing or why their dealers are so much lower then what is listed on Mr. Heaters website.

StrikeMaster Lite-Flite Lazer 24V Lithium-ion Electric Ice Auger Kit

Looks to be very completive to a cordless drill setup if your just starting out

Harnessing the most modern technology available, StrikeMaster's 24V Lithium Lite-Flite LazerTM cuts 50 holes on a single charge using the 8" auger, while the 6" auger drills 100 holes on a single charge (based on repeated tests through 16" of ice). And it doesn’t matter if its 30°F below or 30°F above. This thing rips no matter the temperature.

That line cutter looks promising. The only question I have is on the durability of a ceramic blade in cold temperatures. Will it be more susceptible to damage than a metal blade? Thoughts?

This new fluorocarbon line is being advertised as "low memory". It will be interesting to see how low of memory this line actually has. I haven't had any luck using any fluorocarbon line for ice fishing that hasn't been very "springy" coming off of the spool! I think I tried 2 or 3 brands and that was enough for me.

Not really new but something I'm considering using as leader on bigger prey. Started using it this past season trolling crankbaits and crawler harnesses w/ planer boards on Lake Erie for Walleye. 20# test @ 12# diameter and it did not disappoint. I had 1 break off all year. Tough stuff with a soft feel. No kinks.

P line florouclear works great for me, I know a lot of others love it also. It's a copolymer.  Get the bulk summer spools, the ice line version is the exact same just re packaged.

Been using the P Line florouclear for 2 seasons now.  Summer and winter, and it is a good one.  i fish alot of tungsten jigs so I have been paying close attention to jig spin.  Just received a new order for lighter weights this year.

Looks to me like the portion of the cutting head where the blades mount to is the composite polymer material.  The ring of the cutting head appears to be metal based on the pic on their website.  I presume the flighting is a typical polymer material.

The quote on their website..."The composite polymer bottom allows for the smoothest cut..." sure doesn't make sense to me, as I thought the only thing doing the cutting is the blades?

I liked it for the fact that it makes tying knots a lot easier. also really is good for those people that like to tight line because it stands out against the snow and ice and you can really see bites with it. I will be running it on all my rods this year. The frost line is made by Sunline and has been out for the two past season. The gold color is new this year because there was a few of the pro staff members that were asking for it to be made since up to now no one made a gold colored ice line in a long time so Clam decided to do the gold color. I believe it was Stren that had a gold colored line once but then discontinued it for some reason. Up until the Frost line coming out two seasons ago I was running the Berkley Micro Ice in solar green. That is another good hi visible line too.

Stren still makes hi viz but not ice ,

Looks to me like the portion of the cutting head where the blades mount to is the composite polymer material.  The ring of the cutting head appears to be metal based on the pic on their website.  I presume the flighting is a typical polymer material.

The quote on their website..."The composite polymer bottom allows for the smoothest cut..." sure doesn't make sense to me, as I thought the only thing doing the cutting is the blades?

(https://i.postimg.cc/YhWx7FQh/39400-A96-I6737-051220-S-5000x.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YhWx7FQh)

I FB Msg them this is their response ..they dont seem to be highlighting clearly  the 10 in composite auger drill unit in their description.

If you are referring to the ION G2 10", then yes.  This bit is made from a composite polymer.  Thanks and have a great day.

For those folks that want to run the SM Light Flight via the Clam Plate I believe the K-Drill to Clam Plate adapter is the adapter you need.

The K-Drill adapter doesn't fit snug to the SM Lite Flite. Sleddog1 makes an adapter that marries the Clam plate to the SM Lite Flite.

Hallelujah!   Finally a mass market poly/composite 10" auger will be available for us this season.   I've done several videos using the old metal ION 10" with my Rigid Octane and it worked great.   I'm very confident this one will even work better!    Of course it won't be marketed for the Drill Driver user,  but ice fishermen will figure it out I'm sure.  ;)

The steps are 18mm (most hand augers) and 22mm (most power head augers)  I also believe the K-Drill adapter will work also

I used the Strikemaster adapter (NDA-3) it worked great.   The funny thing is that the ION 10" was cheaper than the other specific drill augers.

Here's a trip towards the end of year for me and about 18" of ice.

I know this might seem like A dumb question but won’t the fish see the line? I too would like to try The high viz. line gold because my eyes aren’t what they used to be. It would be nice to see the subtle Crappie bites with this line.

I don't worry about it much unless on a super clear lake, or very pressured lake and extremely finicky. Not all of my panfish rods have hi vis line.  We have several big ice fishing panfish tournament circuits here in MN and a majority of the top anglers use a few rods with hi vis for bite detection/line watching.

I fish a lot of Vicious hi vis yellow line on my pan fish rods..mostly using a ball bearing swivel and clear mono leader line in my in a very gin clear lake ..only thing that I will say a silver colored swivel does attract a lot of blue gills hits .

At that price it better come with an automatic hook setter. Unless your old and decrepit (I'm close) it isn't worth it. Any young person on the ball shouldn't need any special rods to detect a fish bite.

Although a $200 price tag is outrageous considering I make my own rods for ~$30 and some labor, Knowing Gloomis they will have an outstanding walleye blank. It will be interesting to see their take on some popular rods and how they justify such a high retail price.

+1  Probably great rods, but $200 for tubular ice rods (read MORE fragile) with a 5 year limited warranty I'll stick with making my own.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the big name rod retailers are simply playing a game called: "How much can we charge for an ice fishing rod before customers refuse to buy it?" The St Croix CCI rods were outrageously priced the last two years, and yet they flew off shelves. G Loomis is simply upping the game, and it's only a matter of time before they or another big name starts flirting with $300+.

There will always be rods that span all price ranges. Ice fishing is getting bigger and bigger corporate support each year, thats not a bad thing.

Small business custom rod makers can make a good profit charging $100 a rod and build a higher quality rod than any of the big name retailers can, hopefully more people start going that route. The quality of blanks now-a-days is remarkable compared to a few years back.

+1  Probably great rods, but $200 for tubular ice rods (read MORE fragile) with a 5 year limited warranty I'll stick with making my own.

https://www.gloomis.com/content/gloomis/northamerica/usconv/en/homepage/PDP.P-IMX_PRO_ICE.html

Looks like they updated the desciptions - 7 models are tubular while 5 are solid - that is still a crazy amount of money

He's always on the fish though, a very good fisherman imo. I don't doubt that he's out there putting in work, but his videos are consistently released and always give insight into the pattern he's working. That said, I'll probably buy one or two of the jigs!  ;D

I use only 6 lb test on all my poles and only use medium action so these would be worthless to me. Someone in other states I am sure could make good use of them. Pike, Crappie, Sturgeon yes I see it. But if you have a Sturgeon rod I am sure you know what pound test it has. If you have Crappie rods I am sure you know what test is on it. Pike most likely has a steel leader on it.

That Butt Dial would be a cool little gadget to keep track of fish.  For perch, we use a standard tally counter to make sure we don't go over our limit, but I could see this being a clever alternative.

Yes has a center point ..I have tried the side handle of the auger set up ..not for me ..I tried using the drills side handle ..not for me . The Clam Plate is my option . Also the HT set up has a snap ring so removing the side handle is EZPZ ..

Still on sale on Amazon right now, 20% off for prime mebers. They added the L hand retrieve today too, yesterday they didn't have any. Looks like they are out of stock until 10/24 though. I grabbed one, worth a try for $40.

BassKhang is coming out with a flasher mount that integrates drill batteries to power the units.  Looks like an interesting product.  I'm looking forward to getting more details on this.

Seller said its 1.77 inch spool.

That piscifun inline spool diameter at 1.77 inches comes in at roughly 45 mm and is still larger than most fishing reel spools.  Considering low profile baitcasting reel spools are about 34-36 mm roughly under 1.5 inches.  While many of the small ultra light open face spinning reels have a spool lip diameter from 36 to 42 mm in size.  That's roughly just above that 1.5 inches in diamter.

Very interesting inline reel.

Well being somewhat a St. Croix fanboy.  The Mojo Ice rods got updated this year.  The foam handles and grey blanks looks great and feels lighter then the previous version.  Not that I need any new ice rods.

Still wish they would just make some reel seats on some of their Custom Ice rods but alas naaahhhh...

Yep, same here. I really liked the waxtail plastics and have some packs of mustache worms left. On the bright side, it does force me to support some smaller companies and try their products out.

I'm not finding that review. Got a link by any chance? Nevermind, I found it looking manually. The search engine here sux.  :-\

I have one coming myself.  It's delayed, because they oversold the red left-hand retrieve on Amazon, so I had to settle on the gold instead.  Oh well. Should be here next week, but been trying to find reviews in the meantime.

Some cosmetic changes and new size offerings ..$179.00 for BIBS AND JACKET

https://icerunnerhouses.com/float-suit/

I took a chance and ordered one of these float suits.  At HALF price (or less) of the big name brands, it's worth a shot.  Seems pretty comparable to the Clam IceArmor Rise suit, possibly better materials.

I just got a couple of the items that you guys were talking about here:

8.5" Kdrill - feels like a 7.5", but bigger. Last year I had a 8" eskimo gas, and when I went with my Kdrill buddies it felt like I was fishing 6" holes more than 8" holes. bought a wheelhouse, so I wanted to go electric. Would have done a lite flite or a pistol if the 8.5" Kdrill wasn't a thing.

Picsfun ICX inline reel - feels nice and small. I feel like the line tension goes from "too loose" to "too tight" a little fast, but I'll have to play with it on the ice. So I accidently bought the right hand one first (returned it), and you can see that one against my 13 descent reel. The Picsfun feels way smaller, but a lot less plastic-y. It is basically all aluminum. The freefall trigger feels solid, and it drops just as fast at the descent, without the clicking. I'm excited to put a few fish on it.

I just put my new Picsfun ICX inline reel on my rod and it looks good. If you want to fish ultra light this is the way to go.
I only have one complaint about the design of the reel. The free fall lever is in a poor position. The line is almost touching it when it enters the reel making it hard to grab the lever without also grabbing the line. The lever could be more off set to the side of the reel. This will be a problem if you fish with gloves on. A rod with a very high stripper guide might solve this problem.
If you look a swinekicker's last photo you can see what I'm talking about.

Looks like 13 fishing has a bigger version of the freefall this year for gamefish
https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/13-fishing-black-betty-freefall-xl-inline-ice-fishing-reel?a=2230951

I also notice the pflueger inline reels don't have a trigger for free spooling, looks like they have a button similar to the old frabill 371s. Not sure how I feel about that. I was going to buy one, but the trigger was a nice upgrade from that push button on the 371s.

Post by: Swinekicker on Nov 04, 2020, 12:13 PM
I did see that the pfluegers were ambidextrous though! Look at how everything is lined up on center so you don't have to worry about buying "left hand" or "right hand" anymore. Overall, I don't think that they look overly impressive and I probably won't buy one, but I thought that was pretty cool.

I searched and found one for $179 plus &18 shipping.   The reviews look good!  I like how it attaches to the drill.  I'm debating weather to get a auger for a drill, or just getting a battery auger.   I'm not sure I wouldn't need a new drill eventually.  Probably burn mine up.  My problem is blades can go dull fast on sandy ice, which we have some years.  This is one of those years as the water levels are low, and no snow cover allows wind to blow a lot of dirt from the exposed shore lines.

K-Drill/chipper style blades tend to do better with "dirty ice" ...Mora/shaver blades do ok in dirty ice and in general are cheaper so having a spare set at the ready is good insurance (these can also be sharpened by hand with a lil practice/skill set ) ...Lazer/curved blades do not like dirty ice at all ..The two augers in the video I believe have Mora/shaver blades

I have an Eskimo 8" gas auger I bought new in 97.  I've had to replace the blades 2 or three times, and had to take it to a repair shop once to replace a part in the auger.  The thing is about gas, once the dull a bit you just have to put a little weight on it.  It's still drilling holes fine, but this year may dull the blades bad.  It's still cutting, but I'm getting old and lazy and would like a much lighter option.   I hate dealing with gas also.

I run a Mil 2704/Clam plate/ 7.5 K-Drill ..works for me ..I am eventually going to swap out the K-Drill for an 8" HT E-Drill..once I find my Clam extension

This is my exact drill, glad I found a video of someone using a cheaper drill.

Didn't catch what Ah the battery was. Looked like a 2 or 4 ah. Not bad with 19" of ice.

I have an older drill but a new 20V battery.  I may get that E drill with the neat handle & connection to drill.    Or go with Kdrill.  IDK

Better not get the K-drill to use with that drill. It wont work out for you. Also he is using a 6" auger. I wouldn't think it would work with anything larger. I looked it up and that drill comes with 2.5 AH batteries. They wont turn the K-drill or larger bit.

:nono: :nono: :nono: Under powered under torqued drills will epically fail eventually

These are the drills most commonly used for the job ...sure there are some folks that use some one off drill/battery combos ..you may be able to drill several holes ...let it cool down ..drill some more ..but these drills get the job done right the first time .One and done . You will save money in the long run

Thanks!!  Those are the answers I've been looking for.   I think it best just to get battery auger.   I'll probably burn up my drill, even though I don't drill many holes.   I think I'll get the Trophy Strike for $300....120V 8"

Not sure about Trophy Strike ..think they are or will be defunct soon . As far as cordless drill set ups they are just fine with the right drill and batteries ..and if you dont drill many holes ..even more so .

I have my Lowrance with GPS from my boat mounted on my 4 wheeler.  So I can find my spots and usually  only drill 6 to 10 holes.   Maybe with new auger I'll drill more and hole hop.  Dirty ice is an issue.  I may just pick up the Kdrill for that main reason.

Yikes. So by noon I'll have 3 holes drilled? I use a slightly modded Clam plate and without the drive adapter. Much faster. I would assume this will save a guys drill some wear and tear but looking at the way they have snow packed into the venting slots they aren't too worried about moisture. Looks like he only cut about 10-12" of ice as well.

With my 7" Nero and Clam Plate with the Milwaukee I could have drill 4 or 5 holes to that one. 14" of ice is less than 4 seconds.

But for anglers with a SheShanty crafting drill this could be an option ..if you already have a not so torquie drill and batteries ...hand auger...and $139 bucks this could get you in the game ..or 10" auger and not so torquie drill ...and/or a wheelhouse ..less chips-be-flying .

Jeezum, that is some molasses in January speed. I think the average joe could outcut that thing 3:1 with a hand auger.  :o
