One way to get out on the thin ice is to have a couple sheets of thinner plywood throwing one out in front of the other to go along but if the ice is that thin it is best to have a rope system to a tree on shore  (meaning you aren't going to go out very far from shore) or have the rope between whoever you are fishing with and if the ice is that thin it's best to go with someone anyways. That's how us hardcore Pollocks do it. But then again we're Pollocks.

Several years ago, rescuers said, 44 fishermen waited on a disintegrating floe while authorities argued over who would pay to send a helicopter to rescue them. The floe broke apart 15 minutes before the helicopter reached them. Six people drowned.

I'm Glad I live in the good ol' USA!!!  Could you imagine the public outrage if the Coast Guard sat around arguing with the local law over who's gonna pick up the tab while innocent fishermen and women were slipping into the cold icy depths.

Sometimes, the fishermen are grateful. Sometimes, they are blase. Once, Bazikin rescued two fishermen on western Lake Ladoga. When he asked where they wanted to go, the men said they wanted to land on the ice near the eastern shore.

"We hear there are a lot of fish there," one said. Bazikin took them back to shore.
