I was out to Box Butte yesterday too. The Ice was 10" to 11" on the west end, we ended up keeping 14 pike and one gill. Total caught was 18 pike and the gill, the smallest we caught was 12" and the biggest was 37 1/4" hog.  The average size of the fish that we caught was 20" to 27".

It's none of my business.  But why would anyone need to keep 14 pike.   ???

because box butte has a special bag limit on pike because they are overpopulated big time. and they taste as good as any other fish when you get the y bones out

sorry bout that, it was meant to reply to the other question. i fish bb alot later in the season, and i usually use lots of tipups with either dead smelt or big chubs and suckers. ive caught northerns there on minnows nearly as big as the fish itself. jigging with a shiner on a kastmaster works good too, but oyu usually dont have time to mess around with a pole. tip ups are usually going non stop.

You'd keep 14 for pickled pike, baked pike or any of the other great options you have. We kept 20 yesterday between three of us. The limit is 10 per person and they're are a ton of small ones because of the over competition for the food. The 35" incher that I caught yesterday had two perch and a 10" bluegill in it. There was no live bait to be found so all were caught on smelt. Great day on the ice!

Lets say you were homeless and standing in line with 10 other people at a food shelter that was handing out turkeys for thanksgiving.  There are 10 of you standing in line and you are first.  The sign says, "limit 10 per person."  They only have 10 turkeys left to give out.  Now in the back of your head you know you want to take all 10, who wouldnt, I mean you are homeless after all.  But instead you do the moral thing and take 1 because you know that would be enough to feed you and your small homeless family.  Plus now each of you gets 1 turkey which is all you need in the first place.

Moral of this story is:  Take what you need, dont be greedy.  Too many fisheries get ruined because people take/keep more than what they actually need.  Enjoy the awesome fishery you have but let others enjoy it too.  Dont know if you have kids but dont you want them to be able to have the same experience you did?

The lake is over populated with pike so they want you to take more out! That's the reason for the higher bag limit

Fisher-icer in most cases i would completely agree with you. But in this case I don't feel bad about taking that many pike out of that lake. Its just like the little ponds that are over run with little bluegill and every year that you fish it the size of those bluegill never change because no one takes any out. So in that respect I would like to go to box butte some day down the road and be able to catch bigger pike and more panfish, walleye and bass. But right now that's not as simple because the pike are eating every thing in that lake.

I agree but Butte is OVERPOPULATED. Someone needs to take ALOT of pike out of there, I personally don't like pike but alot of guys do, so those guys need to take them out so the fishery will have healthy numbers. Too many fish = stunting + unhealthy fishery. But the same works in reverse to, so most panfish in butte need released while the pike population is high, then more harvested when the pike numbers are healthier.

This is just my opinion and personal ethic, as long as its legal it's your prerogative to do whatever you want.

How was the wind up that way? Down here it was gusting to 70 mph with 60 degree temps. Couldn't have done it any good at all.

Well I'm down in Gering right now for Christmas break so I got the gusty winds and warm temps, I'm sure it didn't do it any good but I will bet there is still plenty of Ice.
