Made a trip from Cheyenne up to box butte today just to check things out. There was 5in of ice around shore but there was open water out in the middle. I have never fished box butte but we are planing a week long trip up there sometime after the first of the year. If there is anyone out there that could tell me about the lake I would like to know all I can before we get there. Thanks.

My pastor friend who is also quite interested in fishing with us, will love to hear the good news!

The only problem is that I vahve never fished it as well :)
I am looking to fish Nebraska for the first time, and I only moved to Holyoke in September.

Has anyone gone up to Box Butte in the past week?
I have been in Kansas. Ceadar Bluff, Kerwin and Glen Elder are all ice free. Saw a guy in a boat fishing.

Stopped by yesterday, most of the lake is iced over.  I only had time enough to stop and look at the boat ramps up by the dam, but there were a couple groups fishing down at the first entrance to the west.  Can't give you a report on how many inches of ice, but stood on edge with no problem.

Friend of a friend lives close to bb and said there was a little ice left around shore but the middle of the lake was still open water. With the warm weather it is not looking good.

Can usually get minnows in Chadron. A house out there by the transfer station. Also, someone told me there is a bait shop in Morrill.  It might be called Johnnies?

We are going to camp. Not sure just where because we had not been there before. I am not sure if the camp ground is still open but if it is that is where we will stay.
We have a older chev camper and a new red chev truck. You will know it us because we cant leave home without taking home with us. Just look for a older chev camper with enough toys around it to look like we are living there. lol.

Just got back from three days of fish catching fun. Seen more pike with the vu than one lake should have the right to have and brought home a good mess of panfish. Five of us spent the days fishing and in the end we came home with 9 pike and 150 panfish. Also came back with the feeling that life is good. A big thanks to James for all the info. Sorry we did not get a chance to meet you. The trip was fanstaic and you were right on the money about the fish. Thanks. Jay. aka. gulp.

We had 10in of good ice and were fishing about mid way down the lake.We did our best in about 11ft of water. If you go make sure you jig and stop. On the vu you could see the fish comming in while you were jiging but the would spook if you just kept going. jig and stop and they would take it.
