Title: Wyoming Off Topic Thread
Post by: POk3s on Oct 12, 2011, 11:03 PM
Just wondering how everyone did during the fall months chasin critters around the hills. Didn't hear from many over on "myhuntingforum.com" . Post 'em up!

And now I'm on to birds with the new puppy. His first year out he's doing really good. He's a pro with ducks. Didn't retrieve the first one of the year but has retrieved all of them since, even some across the river that I send him to hunt for. I've killed 25 ducks so far I think. Geese is a different story...he's not too fond of them yet but I've only got 4 so I'm hoping he'll catch on soon.

Congrats everybody!!! Here's my little buck from this year. Not what i was looking for but he'll put sausage in the freezer. The ol' 300 Win Mag and 165gr. Accu Bonds did the trick again this year. Shot was about 75 yds. right in the neck.

Congrats to all on their hunting season successes, and memories made. My son (Kyle) and I did not have the time or ability to hunt much this year, 6 days for me and 5 for Kyle, but here are a few pics.

My goat, hunted 3 days, 15.25", nothing to brag on just respectable
(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac26/mblake_02/Misc/PICT0001.jpg)
Kyle's black bear from Alaska, had his nonresident tag for 2 days when he took this bear, 6'3".
Then we went and hunted the black hills for whitetails last week and hunted 3 days. Kyle was back from Alaska for a couple weeks to get his winter clothes and go on this hunt. He is headed back to Alaska this week. I had a couple doe whitetail tags that we filled (no pics), and I passed on 6-8 whitetail bucks looking for something bigger. And Kyle got this nice whitetail buck.

Something to do while waiting for ice.  I got this rooster yesterday at Yellowtail. About 27" tailfeather.  I will find out for sure when they pull it for the contest.  Very impressive for Yellowtail.  Most birds are planted with little or no tailfeathers.

LOL 2012! Apparently something sweet is happening in 2013 that you can't wait for!

Here's a bigger picture of my elk...don't know why it showed up so small on the site....wrong link maybe.

By myself about 3 miles as the crow flies away from my truck....added up to 6 1/2 walking miles as this is a picture taken about 5 minutes before I killed the elk
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l210/POk3s/elkshotscenery.jpg)

Truck was on the far ridge....2 ridges away. Thank god my dad was willing to help me out the next day....I almost killed us both! We had nothing left by the time we got back to camp.

Might as well share these too....letting go to hunting season and saying hello to ice. Sharing these vids will be my last goodbye lol

Archery Doe Antelope Kill (best footage I got all year....2 camera angles)

Buck antelope kill (of course no footage of the kill. Left my buddies behind and they were able to watch almost all of it from the truck after they snuck back to the truck and I snuck up on the antelope)
&feature=related

Post Elk Shot Celebration (This was after almost 10 minutes of me going nuts. I actually don't remember much after the shot. I just remember going nuts, throwing stuff, and celebrating)

Elk Recovery (nothing big but my 2nd ever archery bull and my 5th bull in a row...all of have been rags or spikes. If someone has a way of not letting small bulls get you excited so you can kill the big one please let me know ;) )

Post by: wyo700 on Dec 04, 2011, 11:44 PM
Although the pokes took third looks like we are still going to the new mexico bowl to take on temple. I think we should have got a better bowl considering this bowl is set aside for the forth place team in the Mtn west. Just shows money talks. Any way just wanted to say, GO POKES !!!

Good luck pokes! Heres hoping that Brett Smith gets even better next year! I enjoyed seeing them team outperforming everybody's expectations this year. I knew the team would be better this year, but to beat AF and SDSU was very satisfying.

As a BSU fan first and foremost though, I hope that nobody blames the broncos if they leave the mtn west for an AQ bid. Maybe next year a #7 BCS ranking may actually mean something. I wish the basketball team could still hang in the MTN though.

My work truck is a 3/4 ton Chevy with a 6.0 and a six speed and almost positive has 3.73 gears and it struggles pretty bad in the wind and hills and I really never pulled anything to heavy.  My Nissan Titan has 4.10 set up with a five speed and will out pull the Chevy easily.

I'm looking at 5.3/6speed aut0/ 3.08 gears. I drive a 3/4 ton with 8.1/6speed stick/4.10 now. It is a puller but I will never buy another 3/4 ton truck again. I do alot of 1 day fishing trips, Cheyenne to glendo and use 25 gallons of fuel. I have a little boat and it only goes out 6 times a year. dont need a stump puller to haul my ice hut in the bed.

My dad has a 2010 Silvarado 1500 with the 6.2L and the 6-speed Allison. We took it to Washington st. this summer and pulled a horse trailer with two horses and a fully loaded truck, and got about 12MPG on the way up there. On the way back, with out the trailer we averaged 18MPG at interstate speeds. Not sure about the gears it has in it, but its a pullin' machine. never once had to take off the cruise control to go up or down a hill.

my cuz has a 04 silverado with the 5.3L. dont know what the gearing is or tranny but it pulls his 1960 14ft bumper pull like it was nothing. same camper killed my 98 silverado with 5.7L about 3 years ago.that camper is heavy so i can say his truck does very well

Quick story: on the last day of duck season up here I was making a stalk on a pair of buffleheads (something I really wanted for the wall) and a coyote ran down the shoreline after them and ruined my last chance. I had four shells left for the shotgun and wanted to find some way to use them up today. I was intending to hunt spruce grouse, but on the way there stopped to check out all the ducks in the lagoon. There I saw the coyote, same one that screwed me over harassing the ducks. I crouched behind a log as it came down the shore toward me and squeaked at it. The coyote came running full tilt right at me, and stopped at the log I was crouched behind. Close enough to hear it breathing! Too bad they aren't that dumb back home! Shot it at about 5 yards. 3" steel did work! Not too shabby for my first ever coyote!

That's frickin' awesome! One day me and my dad were waterfowl hunting on the river. We were sneaking up to the river's edge but the edge is the top of a hill in that area. We're about 100 yards from the bank when a coyote pops up right where we're headed, shakes off and commences to run right at us clicking his hills without a worry in the world. Me and my dad were in the wide open in the middle of shin high sage brush and he ran right at us. When he got to about 7 yards he finally noticed me and turned....so i put some 3" steel right through his shoulder. DRT! Wish that kind of stuff would happen more often. Oh and after taking pictures with the coyote, we continued to sneak up to the bank and my dad whacked a goose off of it :)

Just picked up a mission bx1 bow with accessories of craigslist. I am new to archery and didn't want to spend alot. Just need arrows and a target now. with all the crappy ice this year I think I may do more shooting than fishing.

Congrats, and welcome to the world of archery! I enjoy it so much I haven't hunted big game with a rifle in over ten years! Just got a new Bowtech Destroyer 340 not long ago, and am in the market for another longbow  ;)

I was looking at the bowtechs pretty seriously but I didn't want to spend alot on my first one, gotta love craigslist. I guess you can trade these in at pro shops like a truck. I figure I can use this one for a season and see if I like it. Who knows it might be all I need for 10 years.

don't forget archerytalk.com hump! I bought a bowtech 82nd airborne off there for less then $500 bucks. ended up being 492 after shipping, and paying the "gift" option on paypal.....It had been shot a grand total of 12 times. Basically got an all new bowtech for half the price! Can't beat it!

I like craigslist cause you can go look at the item in person and meet the seller to see if they are shady. I got the bow with 4 pin sight, rest, quiver, and release for 400. Also picked up a cabelas fly rod with reel backing and fly line, and case for 50. Merry Christmas Matt. Go 9ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kind of off subject but does anyone know of any decent muskie/pike lakes in the wyoming/colorado area?  I spend summers in northern minnesota and chase muskies all summer.  I go through some serious muskie withdraws when i come back haha.  Ive herd steamboat has a great trophy pike lake, has anyone ever fished it?

Stagecoach which is just a few miles south and east of Steamboat had some nice pike in it. I haven't fished it for a few years but they used to catch some real hogs out of there.

Man, I wish it was shot near Riverton! Actually, it's Nebraska. There are turkeys near Riverton, not many and mostly on a particular piece of private property. The Casper mountain to Laramie Peak area has them too. Pretty huntable populations if you can find them.

I knew there were turkeys in all those places just never been able to really find them. I tried hunting laramie peak one year when I was at UW....found some doe mule deer and that was it.

Tons of turkeys down stream from Evansville along the Platte. Some people allow hunting, some think they are their pets. A lil bit of public.

With a freezer full of Buffalo, I decided to do an experiment today.
Started with about 2 lbs of burger rolled out flat about 12'' square. Season with seasoning salt, garlic salt and pepper.
Some green onions, onion, red, yellow and orange bell peppers.
Sauteed in a cast iron skillet, seasoned with garlic and seasoning salt. Set aside and allow to cool
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh148/er-e-is/IMG_6175.jpg)
Start a bacon weave.
Add sauteed veggies to meat.
Shredded cheddar and fresh mozzarella cheese. (Could use more cheese.)
Roll meat loaf.
Wrap with bacon weave.
Rolled up and resting.
The grill.
About an hour later.
Ready to serve.
Very good, will tweak just a little, but overall was a big hit.

If I get this schtuff done maybe I can hit something later this afternoon... Wasn't even my idea to leave the Country either... I said "Devils Lake is nice this time of year, honey dear" but NOOOOoooooo!  :roflmao:

I need some advice from someone who may have some experience with a line of rods. I'm a huge St. Croix fan and would like to purchase 2 new rods for this season. One for finesse fishing walleyes and one for casting cranks/swimbaits for pike. I was thinking an eyecon in M weight for finessing and a St. Croix premier in M weight for pike. I have heard that the premier has plenty of backbone and was wondering if anyone has some 1st hand experience fishing the eyecon, avid, premier, tourney series, or any series for pike/eyes. Any feedback would be appreciated. Price is not an issue. I just want 2 quality rods that I can use for years.
Title: Re: Wyoming Off Topic Thread
Post by: Houligan on Mar 15, 2012, 11:50 AM
While I don't like to tell anyone exactly what to buy for a rod, it depends on line type and bait size. For an average size crank bait Med w/mod - fast action 6'-6" to 8' is good for all around using mono or florocarbin (because there is some line stretch) but if you are going to use braids or any other kind of no stretch types of line you would want a fast or even x-fast action or you end up pulling the hooks out occasionally. Overall a fast action is good for cranks. I use different rods for different bait/line types and sizes. I do use St Croix rods and are my favorite plus they sponsored me years ago and I got most of them through the sponsorship. You cannot go wrong with the brand.

So in general regardless of the model you're going to have to match the rod to the bait and line size/type plus are you looking at casting or spinning rods? I generally use casting on cranks and the swim baits, in four/six different rod sizes, plus it depends on the type of crank also (shallow/deep, square bill and lipless).

Knowing I did not give you an exact answer maybe you can decide on your average conditions, baits, sizes and lines and have a better understanding of what to start with. Over the years I have learned and had better success matching lines, baits, rods and conditions for the occasion but I know most fisherman don't think that way and are in the one size fits all mode.

Hunting Season 2012

I would prefer all of my archery shots to be about 3 yards....but when I put 'em right there at 70 yards I guess I can't complain.
Called this bull Right through this open meadow. 6th day hunting elk this season. After the 40 yard shot I lost site of him as I was shooting from inside the trees into the meadow. I quickly walked to where I could see into the meadow and saw him standing there with his legs wide. A few more seconds and he tipped over dead. Ran 15 yards and was dead within 15 seconds. Gotta love the Shuttle T-Locks, Easton Axis Arrows, and Bowtech Combo. Found the arrow in the dirt 20 yards past where he was standing.
Bull I called into 22 yards for a buddy the next day.

Now bring on the duck/goose migration and the ice capped lakes! I'm ready for the cold (I think). Might go try and kill me a wolf too :)

Back in July, my son caught a 8lb walleye out of Glendo, we decided to order him a "replica" from Wildlife Creations/Bass Pro Shops.

Well it arrived today, I have to say it looks better than most skin mounts I have seen of Walleye, and I highly recommend their work!
$12.00 an inch, and I don't have to freeze a fish/ find a taxidermist, and we can let all are breeder size fish go to get bigger!

Pretty cool!

That was a great video. I am going to send two christmas cards to Sandy Hook Elementary School. One for the kids and one for the faculty. Who knows if it will even get read but I figure if it makes one person feel a little bit better than I feel better.

There has now been mass shooting/suicide threats to Green River and Rock Springs High Schools that's supposed to take place on Friday "The end of the world". There are low life losers in every school and community....and as long as the media continues to treat them like celebrities when they do something awful, than these twisted individuals will continue to take innocent lives with them instead of capping themselves in their own basement where they wouldn't get any media attention.

Instead of going after gun owners we should be looking at the media and internet and how they train the crazies.  Some individuals are related to sheep and rarely are able to initiate a new thought. But with the help of the media and the in-depth how to seminars they have on how an event happened start to finish. They now have all the information necessary to accomplish devastating deeds.  Reporters seem to believe that they are just reporting the news and are not responsible for what they say or print.  I believe in the right to bare-arms and free speech totally but rarely are the ones speaking held accountable for how and what they present.

If I may ammend your comment. The constitution does not give rights. They are rights that we are born with and are enumerated in the constitution. American legal scholar Lysander Spooner argued that we have these rights even if the constitution wasnt written.

Im sorry if I sounded flippant rbmchief, but its something that i see often.

Olefish Im with you on that. We see vibrant debate on many things, but yet the debate is in an incredibly narrow spectrum. And it always seems that in the acceptible spectrum more freedom must be handed over to those that wield the power of the State.

On the bright side Wyoming, Texas, and Missouri are drafting bills to nullify those executive orders.

Thought I'd share a couple "humorous" stories from this weekend.

Saturday evening I was drilling some holes, my auger throttle is rigged because Tecumseh and jiffy can't seem to get me the right parts" if I gas it just right the throttle will stick until I push the throttle handle manually back, I was carrying my running auger across the ice by the top of the auger blade when I must have bumped the throttle causing it to stick wide open, the motor and handle are spinning like a top, don't wanna drop it and brake something, and I'm sure as heck not stickin my hand in there and breaking it, so as I'm standing there deciding how to solve this problem, the pull cord whips and and begins to smack me multiple times across the jaw and head, took about 10 hits before I figured out wth was going on and finally got it shut down, we'll needless to say my jaw and head are a little tender today

Post by: rbmchief on Jan 21, 2013, 01:43 PM
Funny enough right? Well I just had to go test my luck on Sunday.

I was fishin in my two man frabill hut, sitting down with all my gear in it, attached to the 4 wheeeler with the steel tow bars, a nice twenty minute Gail decides to show up, lifts the shanty up with me in it, at this point one of the tow bars disengages allowing the shack to come off the ground and flip, dumping me and covering me in minnows, minnow water, lures, the contents of my tipup box and everything in my cooler. I fight my way out of the mess, look up to see my hut in the air like a kite pulling my hut and 4wheeler across the bare ice a good 100'. All of my gear gets scooted all the way to the damn across the ice. I catch up to the runaway train and step into the hut to get everything battoned down to have the wind whip it out from under me and slam me on the ice. Twice. Well I finally managed to get everything broke down and picked up and finally took the hint and left for home a bruised and battered ice fisherman. Man I wish someone would have been with me this weekend to tape it

It reminds me of the time I bought my boys an older used mini bike and when I got it start the throttle stuck open and I had a hold of one handle bar as its was taking me in 360's  the bike bouncing off the ground violently and me screaming at my boys to run for it, by the time I got it shut down it beat the pi$$ out of me.
Title: gun control - Harrisburg PA outdoor show possible cancelation
Post by: Houligan on Jan 24, 2013, 08:11 PM
I really didn't want to start this here it needs its own subject header and thread to be discussed but it is off topic from "ice fishing".

Most know about the big outdoor show put on in Harrisburg PA, if you don't its one of the countries largest outdoor expo's ever. I was an exhibitor there many times and later worked the show for Outfitters in employ.

Well it seems that the show promotions company, Reed Exhibitions something or other, from Connecticut has taken the stance that they will not allow any tactical weapons to be displayed nor supplies and parts and such to be sold at the show. In response to the current stand Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops and many other big hunting and fishing suppliers, organizations (if not all), Outfitters, Taxidermists, hunters and the general public are saying the heck with you Reed Exhibitions we are pulling out of the show.

We were finishing up some mounts that were supposed to be shipped there for display in Outfitters booths when we got a phone call today informing us that the show had been cancelled. Now I have not confirmed it yet its just what we were told by participants of the show. We were told that hunters were warning their favorite Outfitter to not go in response to the ruling or people would attempt to black ball those that participated in the show.

The amount of money that show brings in and the positive effect it has on the local economy for more than 10 days is astronomical. The losses will be huge BUT for a good cause. Its kind of like Jim Zumbo saying "there is no need for those types of guns". The good thing is we need to and are sticking together when it comes to outdoor sports and our true almost forgotten culture in America.

One can only begin to try to imagine what the people of Connecticut have been going through and I for one send my prayers for the ones that suffered losses. Still I am not going to give in when it comes to gun rights and the outdoor community sticking together on the important issues such as gun control.

Even our "newly reelected" stated, in so many words, during his address after the shooting incident on every TV channel, its coming. Gun control is going to be a huge topic very soon and its going to get ugly! I can't help but feel sorry for the victims and now the businesses that will loose out because of the whole mess started by a few delinquent, lower than life pieces of vile excrement, waste of clean air breathing, slug sloths of this society.

The battle over gun control may be lost some day and its just going to suck when the same ignorant people whom fought so hard for that control end up staring down the barrel of that same "ASSAULT WEAPON" being held by the same lowlife and none of us law abiding ex gun totters will be able to shoot the friggin idiot in attempt to save our nemesis life.

To me that's irony in the first degree!!!

Just checked and the PA guys have also started a thread about this. Check here (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=244366.0) for more and a list of businesses who pulled out and are standing up for our rights.

And here is an updated list (http://mynortheastoutdoors.com/esos-boycott-supporters/) of vendors that are pulling out of the show.

Cheers!

That was my favorite one as well. (imagine that) but the Doridos comercial with the goat was a pretty good one also. I've known people that like to bash farmers and I always told them that it's "hard to bash a farmer with your mouth full".  ;D

If my memory serves me correct, he left on his own. But like MountainMan, that guy could fish lakers. Here's a pic of one of them.

Yeah, that was bottomdweller. Got in a disagreement with Lonewolf (who I believe might be a national mod) about how the online tournament was being conducted. Went on a bit of a rant and got privileges revoked. I'm sure he or his friends will see this, and maybe one of them that still has privileges can send you a pm. Or send spudbar a pm. His username is still active.

I went fishing one morning but after a short time I ran out of worms.
Then I saw a Rattler with a frog in his mouth.
Frogs are good   bait.
Knowing the snake couldn't bite me
With the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the
Head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to
Release the snake without getting bit.
So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a
Little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp.
I released him into the lake without incident and carried on
Fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. It was that damn snake,
With two more frogs.

Number 50
There are some fun mile stones in a person’s life and I reached one yesterday, I was able to harvest my number 50 elk.   What makes this number 50 extra special is that I did it on my own in the -12 to -18 degree freezing cold.  I am lucky in that I can hunt within 20 miles of my house and after 8 days of looking for and not getting an elk getting should make the bitter cold a no go day.  I am just not smart enough to understand giving up and off I went.  Rumors are hunter’s best friend or worst enemy.  I hear rumors and tend to not listen very close unless it from someone that may let the truth slips out.  So at 6:00am I was on the road wonder if the last snow would stop my progress to creek bottom that the elk supposedly are calling home.  I made it to the road that fallows the creek and found elk tacks but they were old and would make poor soup.  So I decided to take the trip around to the east side of the hill and the other creek.  This trip requires 3 creek crossing and if you have not played in frozen creeks with your truck, hum be smarter than me and do not.   I made it through the 3 crossing and found the elk tracks and sign so thick you would think a herd of sheep had been feeding the meadow and creek bottom, but sadly they had move on.  Well I had trekked this fare and decided to travel just a little farther along the trail.  I was looking in some sage brush to my left and though that is not normal and a critter stepped into sight and it was an elk and then 2 more heads popped up.  It was just to fare to shoot so I worked my way around for a better view and they had vanished. I looked on the ridge and almost had to sit down and question my sanity, because there was at least 300 to 400 head of elk on the ridge to the west. One small problem, they had made the distance over 1000 yards.   I had a very good idea where they possible would hold-up so back down the trail I went back across the creeks. I parked the truck and headed up the trail to see if my hunch would pay off.   20 minutes on the 4wheeler and 30 minutes on foot put me 200 yards from pay a freezer full of elk.  I lined out on a big fat cow and 1 shot from my 7mm with 139 grain hornady through the heart lungs and my any elk tag was filled.  I had an additional cow/calf tag and I decide now or never and I had one yearling cow standing and looking straight at me. I had a great rest over a tree limb, that enable me to put one between her eyes. So the work began and after an hour I had them both ready to go visit my garage.  A trail was within 30 yards of their positions so I was able to get the 4wheel to them and one at a time I took them to the truck. Needless to say at the negative 12 degrees I was getting very frosty by the time I had both elk to the truck.  So I hop in and put the key in and turn it and click-click.  It is now 3:30pm and getting colder fast.  My choices,  stay put with no heat of get on the 4wheeler and drive the 5+ miles to a ranch house and hope they home.  At this point I am cold and just a little concerned.  I wrapped a coat around my head and face and down the snowy road I went.  Let’s say I was pretty frosty by the time I reached the ranch and as always was treated by the ranch family with a hot cup of coffee and a ride home.  The way sportsmen help each other is why my number 50 is extra special, because some fishing friends stopped ice fishing on the lake and helped me go retrieve my truck and elk.  The trips through the creek had coated the running gear with a thick coating of ice and cause the starter to freeze and not spin.  Good luck and be safe and someday you may make a 50 elk mile-stone.  Sorry no pictures my phone and camera did not like the cold either THANK MATTR,

this years bull. not big but fun hunt. also got a decent goat. no pic sorry. and a cow. going for one more cow friday. we watched a mountain lion on this hunt for ten minutes or so. he was cruising along a rim. made a halfhearted dash for an old 2 point buck mulie but gave up after a hundred yards. looked young. way cool to see though. probably never see it again.

You'll have to look it up mac daddy. I'm too tired to even grab the link for you. Basically Wyoming is doing like other states and doing a raffle for a tag of your choice. I commend them for actually using their brain instead of just raising license costs. There's so many other ways to make money besides just raising tag prices. This is one of those where every sportsman is going to throw at least a little bit of money at and probably never draw but it will raise them a lot of revenue. I like it really.

Er-e-is what are the the "super tags"?

There is a link on the myhuntingforum to the game and fish website explaining all about the tags.  Not bad for 10 bucks a ticket to choose one species, or 30 bucks to choose three species, but drawing one the odds might be high, but might be the same odds for drawing that special area you want to hunt.

If would be a tough choice. I'm just not going to even think about it until my name is pulled :) . I think you'd be foolish not to choose Mountain Goat. You at least have a chance in drawing moose, sheep, and whatever else. Mountain goat is like .5% and no points. Other than that it's a toss up.
Title: Re: Wyoming Off Topic Thread
Post by: WYOBRUM on Dec 26, 2013, 09:24 PM
Most people in Wyoming don't realize that there are already 25 governors licenses no more than 5 can be sheep  and no more than 5 can be Moose and I can't remember about mountain goat anyhow they are given to non profits to sell at auction or raffle and I believe the non profit gets 10% of the take the rest goes to an account that is species specific for habitat research  and the like. They are good for any open area   There are also commissioners licenses each commissioner gets 7 of them to give away to nonprofits this year with incoming and outgoing commissioners there were 72 of those. they too are  given too nonprofits except the nonprofits get to keep 100% of what they get from them, they sell for between 8,000.00 and 10,000.00 they however are good for antelope deer and elk you pick the species area and season. That is correct the Wyoming game and fish commission gave away 600,000.00 plus dollars to non profits  in the form of these licenses  the vast majority are sold too the highest bidder to hunt elk thru outfitters in the very best areas of the state they take the cream off the top of our big game heard each year.

I just finished butchering my buffalo tonight. Two full days of Solid Work. But it is well worth the effort. Blessed to have a freezer full of wonderful wild bison meat.
The really neat part of this ordeal is, I met two fellow Ice Shanty members up in Jackson while buffalo hunting. And we all harvested our animals on the same morning to boot.
So, now it is time to get after some serious fishing.

Great deal I got mine last year with my bow at 17 yards after a four hour stalk. Meat is some of the best you'll ever have! I still have a bunch left. Mine they said was a six year old cow. Got 826 pounds of meat off her. Here is a pic of mine.

Moose, bison, big horn sheep, and mountain goats the application dates are jan 1- February 28. They did change the buffalo this year you have to pay the full $407 up front just like anything else and if you don't draw you will get a refund check. They did away with the whole draw a number thing for 11 bucks. I guess they had to many people draw low enough numbers and they never came a bought their tags. So this way they will for sure get their money for all of the tags.

In the Super Tag raffle you can buy as many tickets as you want for $10 a ticket per species - there are 10 species offered.

In the Super Tag Trifecta you can buy as many tickets as you want for $30 per ticket.  If you win this raffle you get to pick any 3 of the 10 species on the list.

Been hearing of reports of people in the past chasing bucks and bulls by dirtbike and atv to get them to drop antlers. I sincerely hope that any who witness this do theit best to turn these people in. Makes me more angry that some have been nonresidents. Maybe im wrong but i think the non residents should either pay a big fee to pick up our antlers or stay in their own state.            Happy shed hunting!

Hey guys,

I'm headed out in the fall to Niobrara county to deer and antelope hunt.  I've been out there quite a few times on public land, but wondering if anyone knows of landowners who might let someone hunt their private land with or without a trespass fee?  Shoot me a PM if you like.  Very respectful group of guys we have with a retired police officer and a retired firefighter in the group.  I'm the only young guy in his 30's going.

My fall so far.

Started off the first week of August as I went up to hunt caribou in Alaska. No guides, all do it yourself on the alaska haul road. Was a lot tougher than I had envisioned. On day 6 I was the first one in our group to release an arrow on a small bull. It was our last day to hunt so I figured I would try and get some meat for us all! It worked and before I got back up to the truck the older guy in our group had shot one right near the road. Nothing for 5 days and then 2 down within a matter of minutes on the 6th day.

Came home and hunted buck antelope for a few days in a unit by Casper. Most of the goats already skittish and on private land sent me home for a day to hunt does. Killed two by spot and stalk in one afternoon. First time I'd ever pulled that off.
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l210/POk3s/doedouble2014_zps8c5bf164.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/POk3s/media/doedouble2014_zps8c5bf164.jpg.html)

On the 16th day of hunting elk and deer I finally connected on a buck I'm happy with. 12 days were archery hunting while this was the 4th day with the rifle.

If I can just put down that 330" 6x7 I chased during bow season my hunting season will be complete! It'll be time to chase ducks with the dog and look forward to hitting the hard water!

Hello all,
This is my first time being back on this site since ice off and I figured I would share some pictures from my "off season".
First off I got the chance to fish for banana trout (a cross between an albino rainbow and a steel-head) while I was still at school in Idaho last spring. Man are they fun on my 5 wt!

This one weighed in at 13 lb 4 oz. The only one I kept out of them all because I am having him mounted. This is my biggest fish to date on a fly.

Then in late June a buddy of mine and I got it into our heads that we could backpack in and catch golden trout on a fly and come back out in a day. We accomplished this but it was hard we ended up putting on close to 14 miles that day with over 3000ft of vertical climbing to get to the lake we had chosen. We ended up fishing for about six hours all together. Then it was back to post holing snow to get back out. We began and ended walking in the dark. All in all it was a great trip and the fishing was awesome. I think these are the prettiest trout around.

Olefish  killed a small rag horn bull yesterday.  I camped out for 4 days by myself under a tree on top the mountain, no tent.  I killed the elk about 25 miles from home as I was taking the back road home.  I was following a rancher friend and I came over a rise in the road and he was standing in the road waving me down.  He tells me 30 head just ran across the road in  front of him.  30 minutes later and about 2 miles I look up over this little hill and there they are, a bunch of young bulls.  So I had one of my most lucky days ever.

I was hunting by my self when I was able to connect on my cow moose yesterday morning about 7:45 am. She was on the edge of my boundary. She was out side the range of my wanted head shot so I hit her through the lungs. She went about 15 yards and started blowing out her noose and turned went about 20 yards and went down.   9.5 hours and 300+ yards later I had her about 50 yards from the truck when a friend showed up. To say I was happy to have help loading her is an understatement. A 63 year old man by himself and a 5 year old dry cow is a challenging match up. She was loaded whole. How??? I used a battery powered potable winch and moved her 30 feet at a time, by using a large bar I drove in the ground. The truly hard part was packing the 80Lb marine 12volt battery back and forth from the truck to the moose across a creek and up and down a hill. I do have a couple pictures when I got her to the truck and will post later.

rest of story
Ok I was hunting northwest of Boulder WY about 18 miles. My permit was for a cow without calf off national forest.  I hunter 2 days last weekend and then returned Thursday evening.  I had about 1 hour before dark and took a short walk through a willow bottom and managed to get between a cow and calf.  I truly thought I was going to have to killer her in self-defense.   She was about 35 yards and the calf was about 15 yards to my left. She lowered her head, blew snot out her nose and laid her hers back.  I was following a fence line so I had my back against it with no were to go.  After what seemed forever the calf trotted over behind her and we stayed like that for maybe 15 minutes, before they turned and slowly walked off.  A single shot gun seems puny in that situation.  So the next morning I go to another location along a creek that was shared with me by a local guy.  I go as fare up the creek I can go on a trail and get out and start walking back along the creek. There are lots of willows, grassy meadows sage brush and some timer. After walking about 200 yards I get to where I see through the trees into a sage brush flat between the 2 creeks. My cow was standing just above the second creek looking at me.  I slipped down through the creek I was following and up the bank. There was small pine tree I was able to get behind, and I ranged her at 198 yards. I have a bipod no my Thomson 30-30 AI and settled the cross hairs in the center of her chest behind the front leg and fired.  She took a few steps and turned and faced me.  She was blowing blood out her nose so I knew she was not going any were.  She took about 4 more steps and was down and dead.  The bullet entered mid chest and went through her lungs making a fist size hole.  I purchased a masterlock 1500 lb portable 12 volt winch for my moose hunt. I have to say it is the best $70 + $39 for pulling attachment anyone could spend.  It was slow but was able to pull her 75% of the time without me having to adjust her.  Some of the sage brush and buck brush held her up and some rocks also cause my assistance.  After the 200 yards of sage brush I  had to move her down through some rocks and willows to the creek bank. At this point I was able to use my 600 feet of rope and reach the back of the truck.  A trick you may want to use some day, I use straps and snap blocks hung about 4 feet off the ground to run my rope through. This keeps the ropes from scraping on the trees and pulls the head in an up position. After I had her across the bank with about 40 yards to go my friend arrived, 5:30 pm. So by 7pm we had her loaded in the truck. I am not sure why I did her whole, other than just to see if I could.
So why was by myself?  My friend had someone quite at his job which caused him to not be able to get away till Friday afternoon and if I can be hunting I am gone.
I have to admit I was as beyond exhausted, with cramps in my hands, feet, arms and legs. But if you do not try what have you gained or learned about yourself.
I just am not much of a picture taker and neither is my friend, we just hunt.

Nice job farmer and ole! I think I've got two DEER whole to the truck and one elk....and the elk i didn't have any effort in. I knew a guy who was hunting the area, and he knew where my dead elk was. He had bought a new horse that spring and lassoed my elk and DRUG it 3 miles.....just to see if his horse could do it. boy was a grateful. Other than that I haven't got any mountain dwelling critters into the truck whole. That's quite a feet ole! Congrats again to both of you.

I was able to smack a little bull on opening day. The moment got the best of me :)

A few years ago,I killed a cow moose in the willows, 100 yds from the road. A friend had a chainsaw winch and pulled it to the truck for me. A few years later he called and asked if I wanted to buy it, off course I did. I used it once since to help get a elk up a steep hill. It's worth its weight!

Heck yea that's awesome! When I was a little kid I caught either a small striper or a "wiper" . Maybe weighed 3 lbs and it put up a fight like I couldn't believe. I can only imagine what an 18 lber feels like!

They hit like a freight train on a 6" floating stick bait. The only complaint was he had pretty heavy rods, 17lb test line. I would have gone a bit lighter but even at that it was a hoot! The surface was boiling with feeding fish, he could barely keep up with the school with his bow mount electric motor.

Awesome animals Trent! That elk is a trophy of a lifetime! Here are my general tag, public land elk & antelope. I don't know what I was thinking shooting an antelope on opening day of archery season, because it was a long wait for archery elk to start! The elk was a solo venture that kicked my butt, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Painted the elk right before I got the elk, so maybe that was good karma? ;)

No elk there this year? I spent 10 days in that area and the only critters are 2 mountain lions and a wolf.  Maybe that is why no deer, elk or antelope.  I did not see the lions but found 2 sheep kills by them.  I did see a lone wolf and it was big.  No I did not shoot at it.

There are several different sites that you can upload photos to, I have a photobucket account that I use, some do not like this but use what ever format you want and here is some help from the main forum help and questions page.  Good luck and cannot wait to see the photos.

I drew a buffalo tag and was lucky enough to get to Jackson and chase them around the Refuge this week. Had a blast, hunted with Tag and Drag and hunted about two hours -5 degrees, wore my Clam coat to break the wind. Three miles on a horse. Harvested this beautiful cow. Getting ready to cook some up as I'm typing this up. Life is good!  ;D

Planning on a return to the soft water this Spring. I've previously owned bass and jon boats in the past, but have been really interested in kayak fishing the past few years. Pulled the trigger on an ATAK 120 and just picked it up at the freight carriers! Now I have a rig to outfit and still have a shack half assembled in the living room I need to finish up for my Canada trip!

My year in review since last winter!

Spring time brought more turkey hunting than I've ever done. I've slowly fallen in love with it. A big game experience with an easy pack out! I was able to take 5 public land gobblers in 4 states.

Wyoming

(https://i.postimg.cc/SYF8gV4c/IMG-0578.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/SYF8gV4c)

Nebraska

(https://i.postimg.cc/WtYtpXC8/IMG-0605.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WtYtpXC8)

Montana

Utah
(https://i.postimg.cc/3y0dzpn1/IMG-0843.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3y0dzpn1)

The YouTube playlist I made during turkey season can be found here....if you're into that kind of thing!

A few shots from a sheep hunt I was invited on. I was able to film the whole thing and it should make for an awesome video when it's completed.

(https://i.postimg.cc/d7QLtpsW/IMG-1958.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/d7QLtpsW)

One highlight was being with my dad when he took this awesome antelope

Beyond that, I was able to kill a good bull. None of my deer kills were anything to write home about, although I have one more trip to Nebraska for whitetail.

You can watch a very shaky video of this hunt here!

Was able to add a couple more notches on my lake trout belt as well. Here's to ice season!!

You had a great year trent! Even though your deer and elk weren't huge you still filled tags and freezers. I need to get into that turkey thing sometime, I am always bored that time of year anyways.

I guess I'll post a picture of what I have been doing since last year. I Welcomed my daughter to the world in July and have been enjoying my time with her since even though she made it where I didn't get much of a hunting season this year. She enjoys boat rides and being outside so she will turn into my go to fishing partner in a few years I'm sure.

I hate those )&#%)#(*% elk!!!!

What the heck does it take to down one????  I have spent six years, countless hours scouting, reading, etc., and too much money to get one.  I swear I am jinxed by the elk gods.

Anyone have something I can learn from this?  I am besides myself trying to harvest one.  Un-fricken-believable how impossible it is for me to harvest an elk.

hahaha! Hi DJ I'd be more than happy to give you a few pointers in killing an elk if you'd like to PM me some questions you have. Besides that, a rule I live by (especially during rifle season) is to treat elk like those "dark seekers" in the movie I am legend. Seriously. Once elk feel pressure they hate the daylight. Be hiked in and to your predetermined spot as shooting light arrives. If you start your hunt after shooting light you're already behind the 8 ball. Stay out until you can't see anymore and walk back in the dark. It's amazing how many elk come out of hiding 5 minutes before shooting light ends.

It took me a few years to get an elk and I grew up in Wy. I would add to what POK3s said hunt where the elk are, not where they were. They move in big circles in most areas not at random. While scouting you should be able to figure the loop out. Most of the time it takes about a week to 10 days. Fresh tracks and scat on the ground it where you should be hunting today. Keep at it after a while it will go off like a light bulb.

Since my 2019 hunting season is a wrap, here are the highlights!

General tag, archery bull elk. I hunted elk for 10 days before tagging this guy. I first saw him on September 1st and killed him on the 21st.

I archery antelope hunted opening weekend and screwed up more times than I care to admit but did fill my doe tag.  My girlfriend loves antelope jerky and said we HAD to go back to kill another. We did in late October and during a winter storm warning. I missed this buck the day before and was able to find him again. Negative temps with 40 mph gusts...McKenzi stayed in the truck.

After hunting mule deer hard a few different extended weekends I ventured east to hunt whitetail with my girlfriend. She hates the cold and that morning was 5 degrees with a stiff wind. This is after I missed two different bucks. One was a great 5x5.

Since it just feels wrong not to post here...I’m going to!

My favorite thing to do is hunt archery elk if that’s not obvious by now. I put in lots of time, passed up a handful of bulls and missed out on my chances at the big guys. Some years that’s how it goes! On opening day or rifle season I killed a small bull with my dad after he dumped a spike. It was an eventful morning and just flat out fun!

Thee golden gem was that I was able to get my fiancé on her first ever elk hunt where she was the one behind the gun. We hunted a place that opens a bit earlier than my usual tag so that she could get as much hunting time as she could in with her new job working at the middle school as a social worker. It rained like crazy that morning and as the storm broke we hit the trail. No more than a mile in and one of my bugles was answered. Hours later and making the right moves, I was able to bugle that bull into a mere 8 yards for her to have a slam dunk at her first elk. It was probably the most excited id ever been!

As far as myself...my real pride and joy this year was my Colorado deer hunt. I didn’t have a lot of preference points built or anything like that. I did research, wanted to burn my points, and ended up going to a bucket list place just to say “I hunted deer there!” It ended up being everything I wanted. I struggled, found bucks, passed up “good” bucks and ended up with an awesome buck on day 7. It was a solo mission except a couple days I had a Colorado buddy in camp with me. Everyone else post up their hunting season/off topic happenings and let’s officially turn the page to hardwater season!

Well I had to end 2020 by having to put one of my pointers Patch down on the 31st.  The  vet would not do it without doing test that I really did not want and ended up charging me $400 to tell me my baby girl would not make it.  SUCKS

Sorry to hear about Patch.  I know how bad that hurts the owner.  Been there, experienced that.

Went in search of open water last weekend with the kiddo. Took some driving but found some fishable water and the daughter got to meet a big ol cutbow made the whole trip worth while.

Got the golden itch from last winter's adventure. If you missed that here is the link to the thread:

https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=386218.msg4207659#msg4207659

So this summer I went up to the high country for a few days in search of some trophy Wyoming Gold and boy they did not disappoint! I was on the lake 3 days after the ice came off in July, lake is at 11400ft. Fish were a little lethargic but managed to catch a handful including a couple north of 18"

The joys of elk hunting. Takes time to learn how then you get old.
