Welcome to the Shanty greg0371! If I didn't have to go to work this afternoon, I would be up in the mountains on my little piece of early ice earlier this morning! Now I have two more jobs I need to complete before I can get up there, so it looks like the end of the week I hope to be cutting my first ice.

Thanks for the welcome. I think I will be out driving around in the hills next weekend just to see if anyone else is out. Being a fat guy I hate to be the first to test the ice.

18! Good luck to the both of ya. I think next week I will make my annual trek to see how things are going. Last week water temps in the big lakes were still hovering around 50 so I don't expect much. The marsh at the Deerfield inlet maybe....

I think it's kind of funny how the bottom just dropped out all of the sudden. I was in the yard getting stuff ready yesterday in shorts and flip flops. Today, not so much. Coincidentally, my new Arctic Warrior showed up today. Timing is everything.

I am loving the polar vortex! I am going to pull my traps tomorrow and I think I will check a stock pond to see how the ice looks.

Im hoping we get some lock-up this weekend and if the wind stays relatively down we could be doing the perch jig next weekend

there is 3 inches on Herman in the southeast part of the state. Should be on it by the weekend.

Being new to the rapid area if anyone has some general spots where a new guy can pick up some gills, perch or crappie I would appreciate it. I'm not asking for coordinates or anything just general like north side of so and so lake. my email is [email protected] if you don't want the world to know. Thanks again

14! (til super safe ice anyway...)Welcome to the area Greg. Just keep stopping by this site. There's a lot of guys (me included) that don't give a hoot about helping someone get on fish. There aren't enough fishermen in this area to ruin a spot. Even so, everyone fishes differently and may not always get the same results. I haven't been out yet, but since there is some ice now, I'll prolly go next week.

There are a few good places around-ish. Stockade Lake in Custer State Park is a good place for all of those. The issue there is the grubs in the fish. If you're looking just to catch, it's a good spot. They say they don't hurt the meat but a lot of people don't like to eat them.

Sheridan Lake has some good perch too. You'll really have to move around and search for them. East of Rapid, New Underwood Dam has/had some nice 'gills. There was a pretty substantial fish kill this year but there are still some good ones left. New Wall Dam also has some good 'Gills and Perch. It's got nice bass and some decent Northern in it as well. Hope this helps.

I was going to send him after Bigfoot on curlew. If you can unlock curlew there is good crappie and I hear rumors of walleye.

Wow I forgot all about New Underwood dam. Thanks for the reminder jbuss.

I will still take perch from Stockade. I just pick the grubs out with my fillet knife. Its super easy and those perch are so big from being under harvested that its worth the extra effort.

Bismarck is empty now though. Caught some really nice crappies out of curlew this year.
