Title: Its Lake Dauphin March 12-13th..UPDATE!!
Post by: grumpymoe on Feb 06, 2005, 02:31 PM
Okay everyone who's interested....It seems that the 12th & 13th are the best days for most....not all...but heck...we can't expect to have everyone agreeing on the same date...that's life.... so here is what we need...all that plan on attending, please post here....Rod from rockbottom has generously offered both his 8x12 shacks plus the use of the large tent thats up at Ochre....I assure you, that anyone wishing to drive up on Friday the 11th, can comfortably overnight for the weekend...once we have our membership tally, we can organize the days agenda for dining on the lake... ;D  rod will top the propane tanks, and at the end of the get together, those using the shacks can chip in to refuel...pretty inexpensive accomodations dont you think???  oh....each shack sleeps 4...includes foam mattress....what you need to bring besides you gear...is sleeping bags...possibly portapotties and anything to make your stay enjoyable...feel free to chip in with ideas.......Grump ;D

Each shack has a porta pottie in it allready, as well as coleman lanterns and stoves.

My son and I will be there, and will be more than happy to share the expenses.  Let me know if there is something I can bring for the crew (food etc.)  Hope I can still drive my 2wd Caravan onto the ice those dates. We'll miss you, BW!  Porta potties in each shack - fabulous!

Like I said earlier.  I hope to make it up for the weekend.  I will confirm when the date is closer.  I have no problem spliting costs for propane, etc. I was a guide for a few years too so I can help out with the fish fries.

Hmm...Mapblast says it is about 4 hrs. to Dauphin, but suggests going up #6 and across.

If I behave myself between now and then, I should be there.  I don't know that I could stay all weekend, but perhaps head out after work Friday and spend Saturday on the ice, coming home that evening or something like that.

I'd likely be out there by myself, but the others might decide to come...I'm not really fussy about accomodations, but since I wear contacts running water would be nice.

I think all the camping cooking gear is probably inaccessible in the trailer...food isn't a problem to bring out.  I'll have to go to Rod's for bait at some point most likely.

Sorry for the rambling...brain doesn't seem to be functioning all that well right now.

Thriller....running water isn't a problem....its only a short walk to where the slush pocket under my shack was.....there will likely be the group overnight on friday i would guess....bait is not a problem.....i have lots...as far as getting out...#1 to Neepawa then north on #5....just over 3 1/2 hours to the lake....will post directions as we get closer....access onto the lake should be great...24 kms to dauphin....my hope is the overnighters....(maybe me and Mountainmama as well) should hit the burbot bite....can't wait....Grump

I would really like it if someone could bring there flasher, with them. You really have my interests perked on this Ive seen them in all my catalogues but never gave them a second glance. I would like to see how they work, and it sounds like they would work great for my laker trip in april. Not sure how well they work in shallow water like Dauphins though.

Post by: Stevie B on Feb 07, 2005, 07:41 AM
If I come Rod, I will have my flasher (Zercom RTS).  It works great in shallow water.

I'd have my Zercom Clearwater Pro (or is it Classic...n'oubliez pas) along.  Looks like you'll be able to check out quite the variety of units Rod.

Post by: Rock Bottom on Feb 09, 2005, 08:13 AM
Sounds good to me, nobody around here knows that the flasher is making a comeback. Although I know it I never even so much as ever looked at the screen of one before, but you all got my interests that and the fact I saw italo fishin with one through the ice and he did a little demo on it and it looks pretty cool. Once I learn it i will stock it and educate evryone around here I might even buy one for my clearwater trip in aprill.

So do we have a name for our get together?  Is this gonna be an annuall thing? Are we gonna always hold it here on Dauphin or diferent place every year? These are a couple things to think of and decide on the lake the day of.

It would be great for those of you who are coming to post if and what you will be bringing to help out so we dont have the problem of having allot of something and not everything we need. So I have the tent the shacks, Big Barbeque, outdoor deepfryer, moose sausage, and ill try to do up some smoke fish if I can find time. Those of you who are coming and spending the night should call dibs on a bunk as well.

Rod....just a reminder....the one mile demarcation of the Ochre River mouth starts on March 1...tomorrow I am going to pull the shack onto shore until the new road is plowed out....anyways...Mount ainmama will be making a huge (12QT?) pot of her delicious chili for all to share...all the potatoes for fries or bbq...(olive oil for deepfrying)..all the onions as needed...one dozen buns..for those having baked taters...bring your own desired condiments.....my shack has all the utensils for 1/2 dozen people...salt, pepper, sugar, margarine, coffee etc....also....VERY IMPORTANT.....I will bring 5 gallons of drinking/cooking water....I have enough split wood for my shack....any other suggestions....please add them....Grump ;D

Man, I haven't logged on for the last 5 days, and the messages on this board are taking me an hour to catch up on.  Perch pounder and I will arrive Sat. mid-AM, and leave Sunday afternoon, so we'll be overnighting.  I will bring our sleeping bags, a cot, foamies, and enough food to get us through this period, plus extra.  I will also bring extra bacon, eggs and bread for breakfast for at least 2 or 3 more people, or more.  We have plates etc, but maybe disposable might be easier?  Good idea about the water, Grump, although I'd have no problem drilling a hole 50 Yds away for fresh water.  If it is possible to take my van onto the ice, I'll just keep throwing in stuff that I think might be useful, but I'm already starting a list which includes garbage bags and my filleting knife which I usually don't take.  Will think of more stuff as the time gets closer.

It's turning into a bit of a toss-up for me as this month is getting pretty hectic.  I am thinking about possibly getting up early Saturday and just making it a day trip.  I understand that going up Hwy 6 from Winnipeg is actually the quickest way to get there.  There is always a possibility I could have a child or 3 along with me.

I've never seen Lake Dauphin before, and have no clue as to where to go to get to the shacks.  Is there a landmark we should look for, a highway #, or town to get us on track?  Any suggestions on best way in from Winnipeg?  Maybe Rock Bottom you or Grump could put up a map or some directions in the next 10 days?  Thx.
Title: Re: Its Lake Dauphin March 12-13th
Post by: grumpymoe on Mar 02, 2005, 01:32 PM
this is very easy without a map..but i will do one anyway before long.....#5 highway west of st.rose du lac about 19 kms to Ochre River....right into town on highway #20....7.1 kms north of the Ochre River bridge to Road 143 North...turn right and go 2kms east on gravel...this will bring you to a farmers lane on the left...turn in, and go onto the lake left of the house....you cannot miss this...the shacks will be noticeable from shore....and likely about 1 mile plus out onto the lake....the map later!!!...Grump ;D
Title: Re: Its Lake Dauphin March 12-13th
Post by: grumpymoe on Mar 02, 2005, 02:08 PM
for those who might be coming out from the north end of winnipeg, taking highway 6 and then 68 west across the lake manitoba narrows would likely be quicker....following this weekend, i will post several pics with landmarks to ensure no mixups with directions....includin g getting onto the lake.....i just finished enlarging some maps, but it wont make it any easier....pics will do the trick....Grump

Actually, my kids travel well...the key is to sedate them...no, actually, the key is to get them started young.  Camping in the summer can be a bit of a pain, but it isn't too bad - in the last 3 summers, we've put on probably 20,000 kms with truck and trailer.  It isn't always smooth sailing, but generally not too bad.  Two of the three tend to sleep anyway.

On the map note, check out http://www.gov.mb.ca/tgs/map/map4.pdf.  It doesn't have the smaller roads that Grump mentions, but gives a general idea...south end of the lake.

Title: Re: Its Lake Dauphin March 12-13th..UPDATE!!
Post by: grumpymoe on Mar 07, 2005, 06:30 AM
here's the latest....got out yesterday before the big whiteout and BW kindly towed the Green Machine out beyond the demarcation line around the mouth of the Ochre River..will have Trophyhunter, myself and one hidden guest overnight on friday the 11th....rockbottom has his two big shacks rented out for the same night and saturday....they wont be available until his guests leave saturday...he has at least one other available if anyone intends on coming out the friday...the heat blast from saturday pretty much levelled alot of the snow on the lake....conditions on the old road were pretty good until they filled up with the high winds and light snow...i will update here late week as far as access....anyone with 2wd vehicles or cars, will have no problem parking on shore if needed....we can ferry them out to the shacks...ice is still around 36 inches and should not need extensions..i will post some additional info here tonight...and watch the long range forecast if that counts for anything......later... .Grump ;D

With your directions, Grump, I've now marked a little "x" on Lake Dauphin just north and east of Ochre River, and will be aiming for that spot, weather permitting (I no longer drive on icy roads after I hit the ditch at hwy speeds a couple of Marchs ago on Hwy 6 by Ericsdale). - Puts me in mind of Mountain Mama, but not as bad.

First question...3+ hour drive. Looking like a day trip. Now that we have to fish away from the mouths...How is the fishing. I'm really looking forward to heading up and I'm forcing friends to come. Its going to be a long drive and fish would be nice. I know you guys will be honest in answering. Thriller also is considering the brutal day trip with his little ones....fish would be nice. Although we all know...fishing is fishing...what is here today won't be there tomorrow but some honest insight would really be appeciated. HOWS FISHIN' ????

AC from what Grump and Rod have posted It has been red hot one day and ice cold the next definatly no guarantee on numbers. It aint no lake manitoba ;) ;D But for me the chance at some nice sized walleyes and burbot with a shot at a big pike is enough ;D I plan on being on the ice from friday night to sometime on sunday so hopefully I can find some fish in all that time on the ice
Title: Re: Its Lake Dauphin March 12-13th..UPDATE!!
Post by: grumpymoe on Mar 08, 2005, 06:06 PM
AC....it can be very humbling.....and for the most part it has....the encouraging thing is the fish have always been around or nearby....they just would not bite!!!!....you could see them just under the ice....sunday i had one of the best hits from a walleye you could imagine....doubled the rod over....crank...off... and the sight of the unmistakeable walleye tail on its way...a brute...the burbot are generally near master size on the lake...some days, the bite is on "just over there"....so you move there.....and then it was near where you were.....or....just abit further out....warm weather will improve the bite....no doubt perseverance will get you fish....but it has to be fun too.....and thats what we intend on doing....having fun...the fish...or any fish will be bonus...Grump :P

I just broached the subject with the boss...violin teacher is away this weekend, so our usual Saturday issue is a non-issue.  She is annoyed she hasn't caught a fish since before Thanksgiving weekend, so she's getting pretty intent.  It looks like we will try to have the whole family out...we would not be there as early as AC...hopefully around a similar time (or a bit earlier) than MP and PP.  So, right now, I'd call it a definite probably  :-\

As the oldest old man, I resemble that remark (as they used to say on MASH), I should be good to about 11 PM, but then I'm sacking out till at least 4 or 5.  I need my beauty rest or my wrinkles get too deep.

Grump - do you (or someone out there Friday night) have a cell #?  Assuming there is coverage, we can either give you a better idea of when to expect us or, heaven forbid, something happens to make us cancel.

So Grump....How much snow did you get up that way ??? Do you think we will still be able to drive onto the ice ??? I know I won't have a problem (FORD) but I want to do some fishing....not just towing GM's and Dodges around all day  :roflmao: :roflmao:

AC.....just a dusting this morning with high winds....talked to Rod at rockbottom this morning...not much to speak of....with last weekends thaw, you could pretty much drive anywhere on the lake where we are located....just dont go on the original road....the guys that give us access will likely plow (if needed)....so either way....no danger of getting into trouble....Grump

Is there a check-in point on the farm where we should pay a fee or anything?  Somebody posted a while back about a $2 fee on Lake Dauphin, but I don't know if this is the spot.  If there's no more snow before Saturday, we're still good to go.  I hope the snow eases off with no drifting because my Caravan just doesn't have the clearance you guys have with trucks.  I also hope a road will be cleared onto the ice so I can get the van on, or I'll have to unload the gear and park it in the farmyard, then trust you guys to help ferry the gear out.

Monophil....talked to rockbottom this morning...just a light dusting at Dauphin....he was driving on the lake yesterday....checkpoin t is just an old washtub...honor system....$2.00 and if needed, they will have a road onto the lake....if for any unforseen reason that you cannot get out with the van, we can ferry...no problem....heading into the city tonight and back out for tomorrow night...Grump

Right now, road conditions don't look to bad - http://tgs.gov.mb.ca/roadinfo/default.asp?varLanguage=English.  I will keep an eye on things though.  AC, if you get out at your expected time, you could probably call us at home with a road report  ;D

Golly, it seems to change hourly!  Friday, 10:17 AM, and there are large stretches of #5 Hwy and #68 through the L. Manitoba narrows where travel is not advised, including the hwy up to Ochre River........ Guess we'll just have to keep an eye on snowfall and wind conditions.  In the meantime, I'm packing to be ready to go tomorrow AM.
