Need some help for tomorrow
« on: Jan 01, 2012, 04:32 PM »
Hey guys, glad to see some more action on the Utah board, I am going to have to start checking in more often.  So my three year old has been begging me to take her fishing so we are planning a trip tomorrow.  I had originally planned on Rockport but with the warm temps I am not sure how the ice is holding up.  If anyone has any info I would appreciate it, if it is no good I am thinking Scofield unless you guys have any other good suggestions.

Thanks

This is second-hand to me so take it for what it's worth. My brother told me he talked to a guy at Mantua yesterday who said he went through the ice at Rockport a few days ago.

Thanks, that is what I was worried about.  Hopefully it cools off soon to harden things back up.

This is pretty wild, I spoke to a guy on Causey this morning that broke through at Rockport yesterday!

He told me that it was really strange... tight shorelines, and then he got about 4 steps out and whoosh! Up to his chest and luckily he was able to get back up onto the ice himself (w/o pick's).

I myself went through the ice with my right leg in 2 ½ feet of water coming off the ice at around 2:30 PM.  If I’d been 5 feet either side of that spot I would have been fine.  Nobody else had any problems that I saw either coming or going.  The main ice is well over 5 inches in Taylors Hollow.  There must have been 50 to 75 people out Saturday with some walking clear over to the west side.

Decided that we would chance it and ran  out to  Rockport this morning.  Ice was good out on the lake 9-10", when we went on the edges were fine.  They were starting to open up again when we left at 1:00.  We caught some trout, all cruising between 15 and 30 feet.  Caught one that went 21 inches and fought really well.  I also found some perch, I was only able to pull one up but I could see them on my finder, couldn't get them to bite.  They would follow the jig up a foot and then drop back down.  It was a beautiful day and the daughter had a blast, can't wait to go back again and search for those perch, Deer Creek isn't looking to promising this year.  Thanks for the ice reports.

Sounds like you guys had a great time snakeriverman. Good to hear some perch were present to bad they were tight lipped. Still waitin to see a grayling outta there. That's if they all didn't run upstream.

I didn't know that there were grayling in there.  Is there a good population?  I am fairly new to Utah so I am still trying to learn some of these Utah waters

Muskyon46,

The one perch that I did get on the ice was only about 6" long.  I did hear of some pretty good ones come out of there the same day.  I have a friend coming into town Friday night and we are planning on Rockport again really early to search for some Perch.

Looks like they were only about 3 inches when planted, i can't imagine they are much bigger than 5 or 6 now...  but i've always wanted one!  :o
