Unless you're staring that management trainee program at Burger King or as a Walmart greeter, I believe you may be unemployed in late January. Two weeks tomorrow for the gold watch if I remember. You're buying.

Chatty would work great for me. That's where this madness started. But anywhere is fine.

Some good times! I think that was when Slayer got his electric auger "cherry" broke.
I'm not surprised Z caught "the Walleye" He'd been out studying them for a while in the fall. ;D :o ::)

My vote is for Chatty, we did Creek last year (plus, then I don't have to drive very far :P).

Either weeekend currently works for me, but I'd prolly pick the earlier one given a choice.  Closer to my b-day and I could get a hall pass easier. ;)

Who could do the weekend of the 25th/26th?

A few votes for Chatty, but the Tower area of the Crack is just so nice...literally step out in the ice with our food/brewskis/tables/grills, etc.

To be honest most of our fishing trips are always an excuse to get out and have some drinks with the crew, pretty much why we started ice camping also. Nobody wants to be the DD and who doesn't like 3 days and 2 nights of indulging. In fish that is  ;)2  :icefish:

Flaming gorge is one of our main places we spend our winters. Chase lakers all day and sit around ice camp at night and catch burbot and pups. Now if we could just get the big lakers to cooperate in the day I wouldn't have to go anywhere else  ;D  sorry to muck up your gathering thread

You guys are always welcome to join us, we usually hit it from January until the ice isn't so nice which can be mid February till mid march. For those not wanting to camp on the ice rooms can be booked in Manilla if we're on the ice to the south which we prefer, but we've spent alot of time in the north and then its Green River for rooms.

When do they get safe ice at Lake Havasu?

That's good stuff  :roflmao: that place would be shut down with an inch of snow

CO_Dinky should have some intel on that. The North boat cove might be an option. Pretty easy walk to the water.

The North Ramp could be good, too. I know parking is ok there --- at least it was in the fall.  Easy access to set up Sausage Fest Basecamp.
And we could just walk out along the dam to better fishing locations once the "magic hour" arrives for those who want to seriously chase some fish.  But whatever people think is fine!
We have plenty of time to decide.

CO_Dinky should have some intel on that. The North boat cove might be an option. Pretty easy walk to the water.

Technically, all areas of the park are open now (except a small area immediately East of the Marina where they're working).  But things have very much changed!  Parking lots have mostly moved to different spots, so most have longer walks down to the water now.  We'll have to see how things shape up in the next month or so, hopefully the weather changes or we won't have any ice...   :-\

North ramp usually locks up sooner than most of the lake, and would certainly be one of the easiest spots to set up and get down to the ice.  There are a few springs in the area to watch for though, where the ice is usually thinner.  Plus, we usually see a pressure ridge that forms just outside the cove, that can restrict access to the dam from the cove.

Chatfield ponds!

I had a similar thought.  Haven't been able to ice that for a few years now, and really want to get on there.  It's really easy access, and there's a ton of Perch in there!

Kingfisher cove could be another option too.

If the ranger says it aint 6" thick they kick you off the ice!

Tell that to the bastid that kicked me off! ;)

What???  When did that happen?  I've not seen the rangers say that ice access was not allowed, it's usually up to the individual to decide what's safe.  I know you'll fish when it's just "thickafugginuff" though!  ;)

Menu options:

I could stew up a bunch of beer brats the morning of and grill them up on charcoal like last year. Pretty tasty and well received as I recall. I also now have a complete shore lunch

outfit and those who have fished any of the Ontario lodges will recall how well that eats. Consists of a 10# tank and burner since there's no campfires on the ice. Along with it

comes a 20" Paul Bunyon style steel skillet. Thing's almost comical. Peanut oil for high temps. I make a nice beer batter coating for fish and chips style fillets and Nate has a great

recipe for a spicy egg wash and panko coating. What I don't have is enough fillets on hand to feed the multitude. These frigid temps are keeping me out of South Park to pick off a

few Northerns for a fry-up. If I can correct that I will. Comments?

I don't mind cooking. I like to cook, but I figured anybody can use the equipment if they've got their own ideas how fish should taste. As long as I get a nibble. Got the little charcoal brat grill available also.

All hygienic and rubber gloved the whole way. Sanitized for your protection, as they say. Hope you don't imagine that I would enjoy a couple of hours on the ice with beer batter fingers and only cold pond water to wash up with.

The Stinkyfingers part refers to an earlier period in my catfish life when I'd mix up these vile bait concoctions that could knock a raccoon off its feet. Have since come to appreciate cut bait so I'm more or less fit to join the human race.

In addition to the fish fry operation, I've got that little charcoal grill from last year. Anybody want to try grilling some brats or weenies on the ice? I can add it on to the wagon, no problemo.

Put me down for that charcoal grill...same one as last year. Couple dozen beer brats, brat relish, mayo, mustard, ketchup. I'll go ahead and get the buns for them also. Brewski, want

to grill those boar and bison brats? I'll grab some extra buns. Discreet treats for those that indulge.

Location, Sausage Fest, 2020:  Jan. 25th, 2020.
Ok, folks.  Here are some directions.  If you enter "5280 Paddle Sports" into Google Maps, it will take you right to the parking area next to the ponds.  Let me know if you have any trouble finding it on the map.  Basically, just C470 to 121 Wadsworth, South to park entrance.  Follow the park road south to the ponds.

And here's a map of the meetup location:

Time TBD.  Hopefully, the ice will be good on the 25th!

Tower loop at Cherry Creek, same spot as last year.  For those that weren’t there last year, just straight out from the lot. You’ll see the group of dudes drinking beer.

Prob start gathering at the tower early afternoon, maybe 2pm?  Plenty of time for brews and snacks before dinner and the magic hour bite.

I’m prob going at sunup for the morning bite, too. I might look for crappie and bluegill early in the day, if anyone wants to join.

I'm not out of pocket yet for brats and buns so I can easily roll either way. Just need to know by Friday mid-afternoon. Refreshments will keep until a more auspicious day if necessary.

I agree on the seasonal brutality. Ouch. Just make the call.

The ice in those photos looks perfect, for a swim.   Anyone have a sauna on a trailer?

Me too!  My experience did not involve a fishing rod, we had a sauna.

I remember being on ice like that and 12 hours later it was open water.  I will be catching Sturgeon about noon Saturday.

Well guys, I’m thinking it’s not gonna happen.  That ice is just looking rotten.  This week’s 50 degree temps have been brutal!

It might be ok out in the ice but getting on and off the ice could be a problem, and you just never know. Not worth the risk.

There’s always next year!   ::) ;D

Hope to see most of you out on the ice somewhere this season, maybe West or North.  And plenty of open water time.

Maybe we can organize an open water gathering to mark the END of ice season this year?  We’ll see.

Disappointing, but the right call. Sorry I won't be able to match sativas against Slayer. Mentally, I've been in the Spring state of mind for some weeks now anyway. Aggressive plans for

the lower Arkansas Valley waters. Might even do some travelling, health permitting. What's the warmwater equivalent to IceShanty?

Yeah, last thing we need is for someone to take a dive.  Well, it happens!  This is just a crazy ice year.  Shoulda had the gathering EARLY January.  Live and learn!   ::)

I'm still planning on icing more this season.  I'll likely make a trip out to SP to see you, Stinky.  And I'm planning to head to the frozen white North sometime soon!  And open water season is just around the corner.  I'm liking your talk of the Arkansas Valley, Stinky.  Keep me in the loop for some plans.

Oh, and Open Water version of IceShanty is called MyFishFinder.com. But from what I gather, it's kind of a ghost town most of the year.  If you want more of the daily banter, I'd check out ColoradoFisherman, although some of the riffraff can be annoying over there.   ;D

Sorry again, guys --- yeah, I was looking forward to it as always.  Like I mentioned, maybe we can do an end-of-season open water shore lunch to grill up some brats and have way too much beer.  Just to shoot the breeze and hang out somewhere.

No need to apologize but I’d down for sure.

In the market for a fishin boat and would like to pick some of the brains of boat owners.

As they say, the two happiest days in a fisherman's life are the day he gets his boat and the day he sells it. Boats are one of those things where you learn the difference between what

you need versus what you wish you needed. What kind of fishing are you contemplating?
