Since there really is no such thing as "safe" ice, all I can say is WoW!

Hope you guys that went out on 2 inches or less caught a bunch of big fish.  Not sure if there's any fish that would pull me out on 2 inches of ice.  Seen too many people and trucks go through over the years on thin ice and I always ask them afterwards when we are laughing about it, "well, was it worth it?" and they always answer with a definite "no".  Just seems silly to me to take that chance.  Don't get me wrong I love fishing as much as the next guy, but why not wait that extra 2 or 3 cold nights and then get out??

because we are hopeless ice-fishing addicts that don't necessarily make the right choices, only the ones that get us out on ice, any ice.

Last year I was on about 2.5 inches of ice.  It was so bad I sat on shore to watch my tip ups.  I had a guy come down to shore while I was drilling my holes walk out check the ice then run for shore.  I got a kick out of it.  Ofcourse i was only in about 3 ft of water.

That thin clear ice doesn't seem to bother me if it's over 2" but last year when it started getting warm, I fell through ice that was over 5" thick.  I don't trust it after it starts to thaw and honeycomb.  that clear glassy ice is great at 2-3" especially if you live in Mid Indiana like me and just hope for some good ice during the winter.

Some of you are really ballsy..

Fishing on 2'' of ice or less of ice? I don't care if it's 3'' of clear black ice, - 40 or what.....that's just a nutty move either way. Wheres the ropes, floatation suits/ Inflatable PFD, ice picks and so on. I don't think that's cool at all. And you wonder why people drown every year from falling through ice. All to fling an itch...life is not worth no fish....

Just my 2cents

4'' is my limit

Your friggin' lucky BB :D Won't be long now

these pics were taken a couple years back..  im guessing it was about 1 3/4" or so.. what made it scary was the snow on top.. ice underneath was clear though.   managed some nice gills before a guy i know went through to his waist..   like others have said.. i wont go on thin ice over deep water, this was in a  backwater on the 'miss. river.  im the furthest guy out in the first picture.. just barely over the dredgecut..   notice the thin ice broke in the 2nd pic.

i guess its how you see things.. i consider going 65 mph on a busy highway much more dangerous than sitting on thin ice with multiple people around you in the event of an emergency.. just my 2 cents though.

last year on [THE KING] off of million $ there was only 2.5" about 200 yds out but... there were people out much further towards the middle with a shanty and a radio crankin' AC/DC plus they were running

(Image removed from quote.)

what caught my attention was the tracks right next to the broken ice.  Please tell us those are just drag marks from an otter sled, jet sled, or flip over portable.  They weren't ATV tracks were they?

my sled see's 100+mph lots  ;D but you wont catch me going 350+km on a sport bike at least if i crash i got some barrier between me and the ground  :o 4 inches of ice is plenty, i'd take 2 inches of black ice on the lakes right now but thats not for another week or two. got some more pictures from the pond on friday, ice was alot thicker than the day before but we had very strong winds and warmer temps this weekend and i havent been able to make it down there yet to see how its holding up. during early ice we wear floater suits or at least a life jacket, spud bar and lots of rope incase someone falls through.
heres some more pictures

I've got no problem fishing on 2 1/2" provided it is crystal clear. I won't fish alone and we have all the safety gear with us including a change of clothes...

it always surprises how people are scared of walking on 3" of ice yet around here the same guys will drive on about 12" in a full size pickup.   i'm 260 lbs and 4" of good ice is safe just make sure you check the area your fishing in for consistency
