Fished blind sodus bay from 7 am till 12.30 today. there is 4 in of ice in a select few places. most of it is 2 1/2 to 3 in with a soft 2 in layer of water slush on top. fished the south end. was very nervios to travel around too much. drilled about 10 holes. about 10 8-9 in perch, 1,  9 by 5 1/2 in punkinseed and about 8 smaller gills. set up 3 pike tip ups. flag at around 8.00am . was taking line steady but slowly. got first flag jitters and tryed to set the hook too soon. he felt like a brute for the 2 seconds we were connected. 2nd flag at 11.00am. this fish was stripping line fast. as soon as i got close he dropped the bait. i was in 4 fow and im thinking he ran right under me and heard me..not sure. fun first morning though. i was the only one there untill about 9, and when i left there was 3 guys out there. the ice was making me really nervious . i drilled one hole half way the auger stopped and i heard a BOOM out of the ice...fun times

first fish of the season......tons of dinks today

a few of the nicer fish

so a nice fish fry anyway, and hopefully worked out the jitters. but watching the spindle spin on the thermals is awesome!!!

The wait is all over now eh Billy!  Good mess of fish, hope your luck changes on the pike eh!  You'll have to carry a duck call and a shotgun on the lake with you.  When those heathen's come around drilling holes 10 ft. from your tipups, just start highballing on your call looking skyward.  Then walk toward them calling and staggering like your drunk.  Should do it!  IF not, try a predator call.

im thinking billy, its the combo of thin ice and shallow water that make the bigger fish spooky. going lighter line is always the way to go. remember you cant catch them ifin they dont bite. all them smallies had to be a fluke but fun on the light line. continued good fishing, happy holidays and the day is coming that we will get to meet each other and fish. i was there in my van thurs am around 9 am and yelling to my bud that was fishing. he was right out in front of the holiday harbor shed sign banging the perch. he got his limit and then some thurs and fri using glo jigs and fatties in 8-12 fow. the ice was good but rain, warm temps and wind will make it iffy for awhile. big dave out.

made it to todays spot at 6.30....everything set up by 7. around 7.45 i was moving a tip up when my brother starts screaming FLAG FLAG FLAG!!!! AND ITS REALLY SPINNING HARD!!!!  i slowly walk over pick up the trap, set the hook and after a 5 minute battle i was rewarded with the first pike of this ice season, last pike of 05

28" 6 pounds....not the monster im looking for, but after messing up so many early ice flags ...ill take it. other than that the fishing was super slow, and we ended up with some smaller assorted perch and gills

so all in all a great day and great end to the year.

here is to good fishing for all in 2006
