No reason you can't use that as the main line. In fact 27 - 36# Dacron (or Nylon if you must) handles very well in the cold. Just attach an appropriate leader and you'll be fine.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Can it be eaten? Does it taste like lawyer?
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

It's been called "poor man's lobster". They also put up a good fight and slimy as snot.

Never eaten lawyer but cusk is wonderful to eat. I usually freeze a bunch of it and make chowder with it all year.

One of these years, when fishing at LOW I will have to keep one.  We always just cut the line and sacrificed the jig.  Hated bringing one up the hole.  Was always a good fight and had you thinking you had a large walleye, only to see the line start going in circles, then everyone would sit back down and start laughing at you.

They won't be laughing when you make a fish chowder out of one! I call it freshwater scallops. Delicious! They are highly coveted up here in NH.

Any special ways to fillet, or just like a regular fish?  I have heard of cooking/boiling it in Sprite/7UP.

I just cut it up like regular fish. Think of it as a catfish. Actually, I shouldn't say that, I've never cut up a catfish, but I have been told it's similar. Golly no, don't boil it in Sprite or 7up, this fish is delicious just as it is! There is no need to mask the flavor, it's one of the best tasting fish you can eat! I cut it up in boneless chunks about 1" pieces and make a pretty standard fish chowder with it. Chunks of white perch and crappie too if I have it... real good stuff.
