Ice fishing terminology??
« on: Jan 14, 2020, 10:02 AM »
 ::) ::)   I fish NH , Maine and Vermont.
For my half century of ice fishing we used Tipups  or Traps.
When did we begin calling them TILTS?  I've fished in Vt where some fisherman balance reel and rod above the hole waiting for it to tip down to signal a fish.
I'm to old to be confused by new terminology!!

Tip ups is what I knew growing up. Maybe tilts is a regional thing coming into the area. Never heard of a perch being called a slab. Crappie yes, perch no.

tilts were actually the terminology I heard  used  for  particular devise ( see what I did there) that used a weight  that slid down when the above ice "tip up" was sprung,  the ones I saw also had a  v shaped wooden spool ( above the ice)that was fastened by a nail  but could pay line out... I was only in my teens, the guy using it was on lake Champlain and called them tilts..

with the spool above the ice wouldn't that freeze up on colder days? As well as the hole freezing I fail to see how that could be considered world's best but hey just my two cents

Yup.

Gills...slabs or bulls
Specks...slabs or paper plates
Perch...jumbos
Pike...hammer handles ( small ) or " Boot" ( large ). Buddy and I started  calling them that years ago when spearing them. If one came into the hole with a head as big as a boot ( bunny style) it was a good one.

X2. I never use 's' or 'es' at the end of any fish species. Not supposed to either. Basses, perches, bluegills, crappies, pikes, walleyes...just not right. But there is salmons and trout's. 🤣

Smelt is always singular in Minnesota. I think that the Main contingent use the plural but it always sounds odd to me.

tip-ups, traps tilts...all based on design of device.
I agree, slabs are wide bodied panfish where SLOBS are big predators (and my brothers John and Mike).
shiners, minnows, pinfish. smelts are all (usually) live fish used as bait but are different species.
Worms, dillies, crawlers, waxies, spikes, grubs are different small baits used mainly on jigs.

Always tip up in WI though when I first took my son at age 5 he came home and told Mom he didn't like "those fish traps", that he'd rather have a rod in hand. Makes me good with trap too. I also confess to affectionately calling them "tippys" but that's strictly me.

Shanty, shack, bob house,  shelter .. ::)

All OK, especially shack or shanty but never "hut"... That's just, well, never mind.

And smelt in WI is always "schmelt" though I hear and occasional "schmelts" but there's always the "sch" in it. Little pike get to be snot rockets or snakes while big ones are gators. Small walleyes are cigars and generic small pannies are dinks with good one being jumbos (perch) or slabs (crappies) or bulls ('gills).

To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

I first heard tilts from some massholes  :P not sure where they came up with that though.  weren't smartest fellers.  when I first ice fished in Maine we called em traps.  I never put s on the end of a word that can be singular or plural.  What frosts my ass is when someone says aircrafts!!?!?!?!

Too funny, I was born and raised in good ole Nodsville (Northboro). I am fairly certain I heard the term Tilts used there, many moons ago.

Could have been a Middlesex County thing. I have confirmed the use of this term from another former resident.

Winnipesaukee "brown" aka finless brown. When getting checked on Winnipesaukee you tell the warden you caught a brown and that's it's over there in the five gallon buck.  ;D

Tip ups and or traps...Is what I’ve always known them to be...
I think I bought new Jack Traps  this year and not “ jacks tilts”....... And have used 40 up “ tips ups “ in the past and “Heritage Laker traps”.....
maybe a Worcester thing ???     I’m from the Middlesex County area and I’ve never heard anyone refer to them as “tilts”, but then again I don’t ice fish in Mass....

I just want to go ice fishing and ignore my adult problems
