They're Traps. Period.
Ive used 40 UP for 35 years. They don't tip up when a fish is on, therefore NOT a tip up.
They are a Trap that stands 40" high.  ;D

The one that gets me is "the lake LOCKED up last night" I'm going out. I always thought if some thing was locked up it was SAFE....h2l

I believe that is correct...at least the way I interpret it. When a lake is said to be locked up it is to mean that it is completely iced over...but not necessarily safe.

Or because it is iced over ( locked up) the water under it is safe from access.

Or I could be thinking waaaaay too much on this.  ::)  ;D

Maybe "locked up" means that because the lake is completely iced over, the fish cannot get away except through an auger hole? Just sayin...

At one time, some mushrooms had me thinking I was catching something. But that's another story...and a long time ago.😉

A lake can be skimmed over which means a thin layer of ice over the lake and then locked up means its ready for icefishing in my book.and no its not a real ice fishing terminology book.lol

Locally, trout are slimers. Turtlehead is a physical side effect of breaking through the ice.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.
