Humminbird Transducer Falling Apart?
« on: Mar 02, 2022, 08:54 AM »
Basically, the sheath on the cable is pulling away from the transducer and some of the wires are fraying.

It still works, but I'm curious the best way to fix this before it completely kicks the bucket?

Not happy, since this is the 3rd year I've had this transducer.

No experience with your model but typically opening transducers is no bueno. Ultimately you’ll likely be buying a replacement in the future but here’s a couple things others have tried. YMMV.

I'd give it a good shot of hot-melt glue all the way around and onto top of transducer. Done this before where I needed sheathing on outside wiring, and it works great and stands up to cold, water, etc. Actually just did that on my snow blower kill switch wiring and terminal ends. It's really just melted plastic, after all. You've got nothing to lose!

Try the liquid electric tape stuff in a can and coat well.

I have a humminbird transducer that’s fine for now but wondering if there’s something you can do to maybe prevent this from happening?

I know it's too late for the OP but an ounce of prevention goes a long way.

Resist the urge to swing it around or back and forth while walking from hole to hole.

Don't drop the transducer on a slack cable and let it hit the end in the air.

If it's frozen in don't pull it out by the cable.

Don't drop it on anything hard. The crystal inside can be damaged.

Transducers are pretty fragile devices and won't handle a lot of abuse. Boat 'ducers get installed and failing something snagging that cable can last decades. Considering the possibilities of damage, I don't know why the ice 'ducers are more robust. Heavy duty strain relief built in and rubber coated cases (except for the face itself) to cushion inadvertent blows to the unit would be two great improvements. Of course they'd sell fewer units over time.

To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

I had the same issue with one of mine but I ended up taking some epoxy and filling the center of the cable and made it a little more thick on the outside where they meet. It held up great. I also used the 3 prong plastic carrier.

Some of the non chirp transducers came with a little plastic 3 prong clip and a safety cable. I have tried numerous times to find one or order that part from Humminbird. They have discontinued it. On Amazon there is a MXH Ice kit that shows it but that part is no longer available. One of my coworkers spent several hours on auto cad designing a replica. Once we verify it works we will probably throw it on thingiverse and anybody with a 3D printer can print their own. We found some 1/4” surgical tubing on Amazon that works pretty well for the safety cable.

That Lexel stuff is pretty amazing. Even sticks under water and cures much tougher than silicone.

Update- it completely went to hell two uses later, on my one big trip to Fort Peck chasing lakers, when I really needed it.

Might be leaving the ice belt, so I’m debating if I try to replace it or not.
