Refilling 1 lb propane
« on: Dec 17, 2021, 07:21 AM »
Anyone else around here refill their own 1 lb propane cylinders?  I bought a set of the reflillable flame kings, and looking to fill them myself this year.  Around home I don't tend to use a heater very often, but some of the longer ice trips where taking a quad out I tend to take more gear.  Any tips or tricks with filling those out of a grill tank?

Freeze the 1lbs tanks over night, pull one out of freezer at a time, connect the 1lbs to the 20lbs, turn it upside down and open the valve on your big tank.  I wait for a minute or so after I can’t hear the tank filling any more, shut the valve off on the big tank flip back over and disconnect.  It gets pretty easy after you get the hang of it.
Any day sitting on my ice hole is better then a day at work!!

careful tater, i have heard of some of those little tanks leaking after refill.  now if the ones you have are made for it they are probably safe.

I got the same tanks last year, i would recommend the flame king 1lb refill kit and using their recommended methods to be safe. Super nice to not have all the waste to deal with and can make sure they are filled for every trip. Also the 5lb tank is a great way to go. Good luck! and fish on!

Got em filled and working.  Just ipened up the small set screw on the side of the tank and filled until saw liquid coming out.  I Ended up buying some kit off of amazon with a shut off.  Will be nice to reduce some waste and be able to fill my own from here on out.

Now about that auger… you mean to tell me you can put an auger on a drill?

i've been trying out the refilled tanks on my heater in the shop... so far pretty happy with the results.

I did check my fill results... I froze two of them and kept two of them at shop temperature.  The two frozen ones were filled just a little above 1 lb, and the two normal temp ones were just under 1lb.  Probably not enough of a differenc for me to mess around with freezing them if I don't have time.

I deserve a few turns of the auger drilling holes from the kids after all this runnin around i've been doing for them lately.
