Ice conditions in Grand Isle County
« on: Dec 28, 2011, 01:57 PM »
Anybody know if Dillenbeck, Keelers, or Carry Bay are locked up and safe to walk on?

??? ???  I wish people would stop mentioning "locked up" and "Safe" as anything similar??
There is a huge difference in time between locked up(iced over) and "Safe" (3-4" black ice) with the rain and warm weather we have had lately.   Ice is never "Safe".

look at my 12.26.11 ice update, im not saying their safe, but people HAVE been out on carry bay and dillenbeck. Dillenbeck i can say had only about 2- 2.5 in on it when we fished it, thats why we never let more than a foot or two of water get below us!

Its pretty unpleasant to go through ice into couple feet of winter water??   Holes in 2" of ice will always lead some foolish soul to try just a little deeper ::) ::)    Fishermen are MORE than  anxious to get on the ice but it might be kind if we look for 4"+ before we post the location as temporarily OK!    Its sad to say but not everyone chisels there way all the out to test for "SAFE ICE"  :o

I am one of those people who will only go on the ice if somebody else is there. Also I'm not one of those die hard ice fisherman that have the kahunas to walk on 3 inches of ice. Give me a good half foot of ice and I'll feel safe.

Well I took a ride to Colchester Pond......did not get out of car as I had a passenger and time was short......It looks like it opened up in the middle and it appears to have skim ice on it again......the south end under the power lines looks the same as last week.  I will be out there Sat to check thickness of ice.

Carry and Dillenbac are OK for fishing now. I was out most of the day at Dillenbac and it had 3 1/2" of black ice. I stayed pretty close to the launch site but it appeared that it was the same ice inside the point. About 4 or 5 guys were on Carry.

Yea south side has 4" close to shore and as u head out it goes to 3". Be safe out there!  The middle just froze over and may only be an inch or two.....the bit of snow we got makes it harder to navigate.

i went out on colchester pond this morning about 1030 (with a life jacket on) and chiseled a hole through about 50 -75 yards out from launch and measured between 2 & 2.5 inches.
