Not sure what you paid, but the Kobalt XTR with one 4.0 battery is $199 at our local Lowes. With your battery issues you said you would need to get 2 more batteries at $70 each, so that would be $140 total.(+$199)=$340

I just checked and you can get a Milwaukee Fuel, charger and TWO 5.0 batteries for $299. 

That's what I've been using for 4 years now. Never had a battery issue and I often drill 12-15 holes back-to-back-to-back.  I never use more than one 5.0 battery because it will drill over 100 holes in 10-12" of ice with an 8" auger(tested it out one day when I was bored  )

It worked so well with my old 8" auger, I am now using it with a 10" Ion bit................... ..........

I think the torch is very inefficient. It just kills batteries. I changed to a dewalt dcd999 with a 6ah and it just eat battery power.
