Extended ice season ahead?
« on: Feb 20, 2006, 11:45 AM »
Extended season?  From the NOAA weather site for next week.

LONG TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...

A MINOR CHANGE STARTING TO SHOW UP IN THE 00Z OPERATIONAL GFS
LATER IN THE WEEK. THE NEW RUN TAKES A MINI CHUNK OF ARCTIC AIR
DOWN THRU THE REGION FOR FRIDAY...A BIT FASTER THAN PREV GUIDANCE.
THIS LOOKED CREDIBLE GIVEN THAT WHAT I CAN SEE OF THE ECMWF
SUGGESTS A CLIPPER AS WELL. AT THIS RANGE MODELS ARE JUST CREATING
A GLANCING BLOW OF COLD AIR...SHEARING THE BULK OF THE UPPER TROF
OUT TO OUR NORTH.

A MORE SIG ARCTIC OUTBREAK IS BEING ADVERTISED FOR THE REGION FOR
LATER IN THE WEEKEND AND INTO NEXT WEEK. THE NEW MREF IS BREAKING
OFF A HUGE CHUNK OF FRIGID AIR AND BARRELING IT IN FOR LATE SAT-
SUNDAY. BY MONDAY LOW LEVEL TEMPS ARE SOME 2 TO 4 STD DEV BELOW
NORMAL OVER ALMOST ALL OF THE ERN HALF OF THE US. OPERATIONAL GFS
SHOW A 4970 500 LOW PUSHING THRU NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND...PAVING THE
WAY FOR WHAT WOULD PROBABLY BE THE COLDEST AIR OF THE YEAR TO PLOW
OUR WAY. MREF SHOW PROGGED 850 TEMPS IN THE -20 TO -22 RANGE BY
MONDAY...PRETTY LATE IN THE SEASON FOR SUCH SEVERE COLD. IT IS
STILL ALMOST A WEEK AWAY SO PLENTY FOR COLD HATERS TO HOPE FOR A
CHANGE IN THE GUIDANCE.

Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

good to hear the weather report.

I hope it gets cold enough to make some ice on some of my local lakes that have little to no ice on them.

Yes, the cold temps are more than welcome, and will certainly help lakes that already have ice. But will it be enough to lock up all the lakes that are open water / skim ice?? If so, it will probally be a very short window of opportunity........... ......good time to take that weeks vacation ;D ;D
80% of Americans are unhappy with the direction our once great Country is heading. Yet 80% of Americans insist on buying blue jeans that were made in China, coffee filters that were made in Taiwan and anything else that was made anywhere but here........wonder if there might be a connection?

Fellas, things are locking up very nicely up North.  and the forecast up here looks good also..  highest temp forecasted all this week is 'mid 30's'...  of course, the forecasters have been a little, should I say, drunk lately..  ;D   but let's keep out fingers crossed.  I have faith...
