My first whitefish ever, this fish came from 70' of water on lake champlain - a school of fish showed up on my vexilar suspended half way down, while i was fishing for perch...i reeled my spoon up to their level, and ended up catching quite a few - everyone said they tasted delicious

Ahh, the joys of common names... Cisco are still a whitefish, any way you slice it.  All salmonids from the subfamily Coregoninae, the whitefishes.

ahh yes, it is, but more specificlly Coregonus artedii is what i caught,
while, Coregonus clupeaformis is what i thought it was - same genus, different species

your whitefish are typically found in rivers too, right?  I've heard some people even
consider them a trash fish. is this true?

they very much resemble shad, and are refferred to as lake herring, but they are actually a salmonid.

Lake Placid is loaded with them, 4-5 pounders...tough keeping them away from the trolling rigs for 'bows and lakers in the summer.

I WOULD RATHER CATCH A MESS OF BIG WHITEFISH OVER ANY TROUT SPECIES. POUND FOR POUND THEY ARE THE HARDEST FIGHTING FISH IVE EVER CAUGHT. THEY TAKE AWHILE TO TIRE OUT. REAL HARD TO LINE UP IN THE HOLE.

Those are all lake whitefish? Right? I'll try to get some of my pics of rocky mountain whitefish......they're a lot smaller but they fight just as hard...........I catch them all summer on the fly! Great fun when the rainbows are hard to find!
