mike692,

Thanks. I lived in High Point, North Carolina for a few years. It is the highest elevation on the north-south rail line, hence it's name. Fun with geography eh?  ;)

mike692:
I have heard of High Point, NC. Probably not much ice fishing there, huh? ;D

Colorado_Ice:
No ice fishing there but I did hone my bass skills on open water lakes and ponds.

That and kayaking were much of the reason the time I lived there wasn't a total waste. ;)

What's the easiest waqy to tell difference? I thougbt pickeral were very rare on highpoint? PFBC study produced ONE pickeral to MANY pike. I guess I've caught many legal "fish" there and never realized it.

Also, you obviously eat pickeral/pike. How do you clean/prepare them? The "Y" bone poses problems for a lot. Are they tasty or just better than nothing.

Thanks!

WM,

I have been fishing at High Point for many years, and this is the first year I've caught pickeral. As soon as I pulled that big one through the ice I was sure it wasn't a northern. The pickerals markings are more like a chain, whereas a northern has horizontal bean shaped markings.
When I clean pike, I just fillet them like any other fish, and eat around the bones. There was a thread on the general board with a link that showed you how to remove the "y" bones with very little waste.
I cooked those pickeral in canola oil, sprinkled some Old Bay on them, and ate them with cocktail sauce. They were very good.
BTW, I caught another pickeral today, along with 7 northerns that were too small. Biggest was 23". :-[
