Osgood Pond
« on: Feb 11, 2010, 12:39 PM »
Hittin' Osgood this Saturday, never fished it before, any reccomendations?
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day.  Teach a man to ice fish and he'll sit on the ice and drink beer all weekend.

Get ready for some flying flags, Osgood is full of toothy's, you won't get many giants but should have lots of action

just use big -huge bait..... keep the hammer handles away. I have seen a couple 16-18lb fish out of that pond and quite few 10's
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

yah thats near smitty's. theyve been pulling fish averaging 30" this year....and i know there are some monsters, i went out only once so far, but yah use big bait, those hammer handles are every where, you should get lots of action, pull up a contour map, i went straight out from the launch towards the first island...

I'm headed up and will be fishing March 5-7 if anyone is interested in fishing on the 5th I'm looking for someplace random to try.  I was either thinking Oz, Kiwassa or Ampersand

Fished Osgood last week and was catching 30" pike.  Flags most of the day (sometimes with a smallmouth on the other end).  Jigging up a bunch of big fat perch as well. Used some of the smaller perch as bait which we caught most of the pike on.  Good luck out there!

I fished there one day last week too. I didn't have a single pike on medium shiners, switched to a small perch I caught and caught a pike within 15 minutes. I too had some fat perch coming on the tipups and jigging, biggest was 12 1/2".

I've never had that happen where pike wouldn't hit a shiner, but I'm new to ice fishing. Maybe a big sucker would work better.

I pretty much walk until I get tired and think there might be good depth changes. I walked out from the launch and followed the south shore and went around the second or third point. It was past the island closer to the south side just when you get into the big part of the lake. I tried 6-14' with all the perch in 12-14'. Got the pike back closer to the launch in 8'. I saw a lot more fish on the sonar but they weren't biting, just curious I guess or I wasn't doing it right.

Caught a few perch, but no pike on large shiners and suckers.  Did catch two 4+ pound largemouths on suckers.  Should've tried using the perch for bait.

Osgood is alright, but there are much better waters in the ADK's for pike. We tend to fish Osgood for a lot of fast action, lots of company since it's easy to get to and a short walk to get into fish. I wouldn't label it a water to fish for monsters, but that's just me. You'll catch fish, but you may find your stringer full of pencils at the end of the day.
"As I grow older, I've come to suspect that I have got it backwards, and that life, at its best, is a metaphor for fishing and writing. Or perhaps neither side of any metaphor is finally dominant, the one inextricably tied to its contrasting likeness, no longer merely a point of comparison but yoked in a new existence to its other self."
