Cloths pins on tip ups??
« on: Jan 12, 2013, 05:59 PM »
I'm going to try it out next weekend when Im in NH fishing. I've never done this before but I think it will work. I'm going to pinch the line and the reel, hoping the big bait wont trigger the flag. But also not to tight so the pike will hit it. Anyone ever use cloths pins on their tip ups? Does it work?

what kind of tip-up is it, some you can adjust the tension so bigger bait does not trip them.

I"m not sure the name brand, but it does have a "drag". I dont want to tighten it too much so that the pike spit it out.

My father and I use clothespins on our 40 up tipups. You either nail or glue half on the bottom of your tipup.  Then put it back together.  Run the line thru the corner of the clothespin.  Its cheap and works great. These tipups dont have any drag and we have been doing this for a long time.

the   trouble  with  adjusting  the   tension  on  the  reels  is   it's  on  all  the  time  and  the  pike  drops   the  bait   ...cloths  pins   will   work   we   use   alligater   clips   with  tubing  over  the  teeth!  set  it   just  so  the  shiner  can't  set  the  flag   ...  works  great   !

Cloths pins work great for big bait. had mine on for the second season and they are holding up great.

Looks like a sweet idea, hesitant about doing that with my old wooden tip ups as they are antiques. Give it a whirl can't hurt

They really help out with keeping large bait from tripping the flag. we often use large suckers around 8" or so and they were allways tripping the traps. this eliminated that prob. thought about glue or nails but this way if i wanna take them off there is only a small hole where the spring go's through.  ;D

My Biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my gear for what i said i paid for it.

Ive done this to all of my free spooling tip ups. I drill a hole at the end of the tip up by the reel and take the cloths pin apart so that one side is off and just insert the wire in the hwhole and it acts as ur cloth pin usually does I glue it so it wont come off ..
Cacth them by day, fillet them by night.

Been using alligator clips for years and my tip ups are older than I am. ;D
I affix the clip with very small model railroading nails I got from a hobby shop so I don't split the wood.

Another old time trick to keep large bait from triggering flags is simply to gut off their tail. This trick causes the bait to try harder to swim which causes him to wiggle like he is severely wounded. This attracts pike. Add a little  spray "GULP" or other scent and heat up the frying pan!

If your using high flier`s, just short flag your tip-up`s. In other words don`t pull the flag all the way out when you set up you tip`up`s. This works for me when I use big suckers.

We use stacker release , rubber bands work until you get cold fingers, about the only time we use them with perch or suckers
