Newly addicted to fishing...Need Auger information
« on: Feb 04, 2008, 01:21 PM »
Hello all. As a newbie to the site and to fishing, I want to thank all for your educational posts. Being new to fishing, I am now addicted to fishing...it started w/ Quabbin Res open water fishing and has now progressed to ice fishing. I try to get on the ice as much as possible, and try to take my 4yo son with me...who has had very good luck so far...I am in the market for an auger, was hoping to get some info/opinions on which one is best. Or possibly if anyone has a used one for sale. Any info is greatly appreciated and again thanks for allowing me to educate myself w/ this site.

In my opinion the Nils Master auger is the best. 8" blade and razor sharp. Very light and one of the most reliable engines ever built (Tenaka engine). Also, converts quickly to a hand auger (non-power). Only downside = $499.00. But you'll never buy another auger in this lifetime. Best of luck shopping around. I would recommend one of the lighter augers out there though. You'll thank me ;)   - Porter

Power auger or hand auger? I have great luck with my Strikemaster Lazer hand auger and my Strikemaster Lazer Mag Express.
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

Welcome to the site. Like cars, women and beer...everyone has their preferences. I'd look at this forum http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=73.0
Decide what you'd like to spend and go from there. Alot of experience on this site that should help you make up your mind. There was even a poll done recently on what types and size augers people used/liked most. One word of advice....I would NOT select a 10" hand auger as a first choice. Like alot of us have done when first starting out, we went and bought them thinking we were going to need a hole that big. Save your back and go with a 6" or 8" if you decide on a hand auger.

Just getting back into it; I'd get a 6" hand auger and go from there.  I've watched guys trying to drill a hole with an 8" and just chuckled saying "yea, been there, done that"

I've had a 10" strikemaster for 5-6 years now with no trouble. A little maintenence now and then and MOST augers should last quite some time.

I have a 6" mora hand auger that has been in the family for 20 years.  I have only changed the blades once!  Just remember to treat the blades like gold and they really last.  But much more than a foot of ice and drilling a lot of holes can be a real drag by hand....

If you want a reliable, super sharp, light weight, hole digging beast that's quiet...get the Nils Master power auger.  You can convert it to a hand auger with the included auger handle.  I've had mine for 3 seasons now and I love it.  My buddies comment how light, fast, and how quiet it is.  Trust me it is so worth it.

unoman, fish 307 carries the shorter version as their standard unit. i have the 48'' auger and if you are under 6 feet tall it would be too long.I'm 6'4'' and the 48'' is perfect.

On Ebay now and it is a local guy I know from another site so you could pick it up and save shipping.

It's an 8" Jiffy...only two hours left on the auction.
