Driving on Ice, Please Read
« on: Jan 27, 2008, 04:27 AM »
I need to vent, but I think there are others that feel the same way:  If you drive on the ice, fine (either car, truck, quad, or snowmobile), BUT stay out of everyone elses setups!  There is nothing more annoying than sitting in your favorite spot on a gorgeous Saturday just to have lunatic "drivers" race through your gear.  Go ride the empty area of the lake or better yet, FISH!

i dont think anyone here would have a problem with people tranporting their gear from point A to point B.. i certainly dont have a problem with that...especialy for the old timers (who basically taught me and the rest of us at some point how to fish) who cant drag their own stuff...... .but i have seen people bring their atv or snobile out to just "zoom" around...i dont agree with that.. just my opinion.

thats fine if you use your atv oe sled to bring your gear out.i use my atv all the time.but when your sitting there outside fishing and you have ppl racing around you  it gets old and fast.so either go race on a track or fish.

yeah totally, it is very common for guys to haul out gear on a sled or atv there is nothing wrong with that it is the yahoos that buzz around peoples tips constantly and using them as an agility course....That is what I meant by "non fisherman" they prob do not fish and understand what they are doing by bombing around someones tips.. It is all about being considerate fisherman or non fisherman I guess..

I started this mess, I like to see people helping each other out for mobile services (getting gear and people on the ice).  My complaint is when you have to stand in the middle of your spot, with a big stick, just to keep the sleds from racing through your gear!  When I could cast a jigging rod to the snow mobile, they are racing too close!  Most people on toys are fine, and just cruising by with all of your gear is fine, just don't be an annoying bumble bee racing around....

I have to agree with you guys. We had snowmobiles and quads circling us all day Sunday. Quite annoying. However playing devils advocate here we don't own the ice or water when its warm. Think of it as a water skier on ice annoying the heck out of you when you want to fish. There are rules for speed within certain distances (which most obeyed Sunday) of people. If someone is breaking that let them or the authorities know. Otherwise you have to deal with it. I know for a fact that the lake I fished Sunday I wont fish that end again. It's just too busy and annoying.
But they do have a right to enjoy the lake just as we do.

In fact I've seen some posts that recommend not fishing a particular lake because it has so much traffic.

Oh well,

Traps? Who needs traps? I have a jig rod and a Vexilar!

I AGREE WITH YOU ALL, CAUSE THE TILTS COST THE SAME AND I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IN THE PAST WITH ATVS SO WE ARE ON THE SAME ICE.SO TO ME ITS THE PERSON ON THE MACHINE. ;D I HAVE RESPECT BUT SOME TIMES FROM POINT A TO B IS TUFF YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH TILTS AT A SLOW SPEED OF COARSE. ;)

Goose, acouple years ago my cousin and I were fishing the Meredith derdy.that year there wasn't that much ice maybe 5'' and this guy drove by us in a truck with a plow attatched to it.We weren't too happy you hear the ice crackling underneath it.needless to say it was scary. :o

I'm honestly thinking of giving up pontoosuc lake.  It's my favorite place to fish, but the traffic is just insane.  There was actually one guy that was just ripping around the lake at what must have been over forty or fifty miles an hour.  Lucky me, he chose my spot to do his doughnuts.

OK again we bring up the endless topic and it makes me want to vent about it too.  Ok so i have multiple of the sleds and 4 wheelers and i drive my truck on the lake.  So here the problem what people do  no one is ever happy, no matter what happens no one is ever happy.  People b***h all the time and people are assholes all the time.  Think about how many people we icefishermen piss off when your out there ripping your auger at the ass crack of dawn, think of all the people that can hear that in there house. BLAH BLAH BLAH so the story goes on.  And I see guys ice fishing do stupid crap also.  For instance i am out on a lake bright and early and there is snow on the lake and this guy has already from previous days had this area all shoveled off for his kids to ice skate on and these two guys come out and set up 3 of there tilts in this ice skating rink.  I know the ice is not one persons, but **censored** so does this give the people the right to come out and go ice skating 2 inches away from the peoples tilts.  Another time on a different lake people had this area coned off and they had a small oval track going in this spot and what do these people do but come and set up there tilts right in the middle of there so they dont have to walk in the snow.  Now Fishermen that say they have people riding throught there tilts all the time and complain might not always give the whole story, on days that the lake is full for instance on a derby day of course people are going to go and ride through others tilts amnd there might not be a way around that  but if it is completely uncessary speed thats when there is a problem with it.  It does not create a problem with me unless they hit my tilts and then they will pay.  Also lets face it most of the fish caught and all the action come before these people get out there riding around.

The ice here was completely black ice just look up on the ice strength tables thats plenty for vechiles and i think there was more than 20 out there  there was almost 15 just in the cove by the water department.

last weekend i was on pontoosuc and there was only a few other people out there fishing. There was a few sleds and one guy in a truck that was constantly driving within feet of our tip ups. and to clarify, we were set up basicaly on the shore line fishing at the most 20 -50 feet from the shore with no ramp or entrance to the lake near us. Just seemed like a few people trying to wreck the day for us. There was plenty of space for guys to drive around but they had to make laps right next to our gear....

Was the guy driving a white toyota size truck with a maroon driver side door?  I thought for sure this guy was gonna kill someone.

i drove down from vermont for the the fishing derby on the quabog this past weekend.
while there were many serious fisherman on the ice, there were a lot of clowns as well!
i've never seen anything like it in my life!  trucks driving through, drag racing of sleds, and doing burn-outs with cars all near/within people's tip-ups.  the funny thing is, many of these stunt drivers we're fishing as well.  the sport of ice fishing looks a bit different in other states i've fished.

i must say, it was great entertainment for the day...cheaper than going to the movies!

But.. I would like to add that there were not any mishaps... correct?  And I think that you are exaggerating a little bit.  Where were you set up?

I agree, as I had posted above.  I'd like to know where he was on the pond as I did not think it was that bad.  Go to the Lashaway Derby and try avoiding all of the snowmobiles if you want a challege

i took out my tape measurer and measure 9 inchs of ice.. maybe 4 or 5 was black everything was white.. i dnt have a problem with people driving around on the ice its definitly fun, but iv already had a tip up ran over this year. and when its a 5 to 10 minute walk from the shore to where they were fishing its really not a hike. but on a positive note iv noticed that a lot of times if a truck drives by a tip up sometimes like 3 seconds later it goes up... i think maybe the fish are lookin at the bait and then get spooked but dont wana leave up their dinner so they grab it.  but it definitly doesnt make me comfortable when 3 fullsize trucks drive by and i kno theres only 9 inchs of ice and i can hear and feel it and see it cracking
