Just wondering how many of you are going to try to ice some cats this year.
If you think we are crazy... read our tips and try it. You will be stunned with your success.
Don't set your tipups to far away from you, they run hundreds of yards of line in mere seconds it seems and their fight is great.

try it, you will be surprised.

enjoy
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

I'm sure I'll ice some when pike fishing this year. Catch more of them than pike.

Can't wait to go for cats this year.  It'll be my first year going after them through the ice and I appreciate all the tips you guys have posted.

Cats are great fun through the ice, but you really have to find a concentration of them to be successful as they are pretty inactive, though they still feed. Usually the deepest water in the area, especially the deepest spot closest to the inlet is best. Might need an underwater camera to locate the schools. Just don't bother 'em too much if you find a big group of wintering cats.

When you say deepest how deep do you mean? 30-40-60ft???????  Do you actuallly just concentrate on the deepest hole you can find regardless of location to other physical features? What kind of body of water are you fishing ?

Thanks
Jeremy

white catfish are more active than most other cats in the winter.  fresh cut bait i think is the best.

Yes, the deepest hole. If your lake only goes to 32', find the hole. If it goes to 65', find the hole. Just don't take more than you can use. ;) I have found that half rotten cut bait from last summer (re-frozen) out fished anything else.  But I have also found the channel cats had a very lite bite, reluctent to take much line at all....till you set the hook! :o
I wish I was in heaven sittin down..........on a 5 gallon pail!

If you are in an area with a good population of cats. You will catch them, especially on the tip-ups, baited near the bottom. Me, and my buddies catch them all the time, when we are fishing for nitetime walleyes. The catfish are a nice bonus.
