I fish with mine all the time... She loves being out on the ice. Never strays far and is quiet.

Leave them at home!  They are trouble makers!

i don't bring my dog with me on the ice...but someone elses dog always finds me, so i have company anyway?  ;D I feed them well and send them off when the venison is gone....It only bothers me when they try to follow me back to the truck.

I love taking my dog, shes a lot cheaper to maintain than a quad and pulls my gear just the same.  The only time I don't like dogs on the ice is when other peoples dogs stop over to say hi and lift a leg on the shanty/sled  ;D

I take my lab Trapper except when it's really cold or I suspect poor ice conditions, he wears his neoprene duck hunting vest and has a special spot in the jet sled. He's the first one to a flag and likes to play lick-the-flagpole with the fish. ;D

I dont mind people bringing their dogs, or if they run over to visit. they dont bother anyone unless they are barking alot.

That same thing happened to me at Black Pond in Woodstock a couple of years ago. The dog pissed on my hat and gloves and the owner had the nerve to get mad at me for being pissed off about getting pissed on.! I love dogs and have always had a dog. I hope to take our new dog out this year but he needs some winter gear too. So bring the dog out by all means just keep them under control and I don’t think you will have a problem.

I got a little dog story.    Jack, and Jon A.  might remember ::)

We were fishing on a lake in Northern  Vt close to the Canadian border, and this other ice fisherman " Butch "  comes over with his pit bull.  We were all Bsing for a little bit, while he had his tip ups 3-400 yards away.
We end our conversation, I go to turn away, and the dog jumped and latched on to my a$$   !!  :o :o   Luckily I had my thick overalls  insulated underwear, and my wallet in his mouth, not my A$$ ! ! !  I did get a black and blue when I was finally able to check.    " Butch" pulled his dog off and beat him a little more than he probably did it's whole life.. THIS is what gives these dogs a bad rap.
I have no problem with dogs on the ice, or anywhere else if the owner can control them .

Obviously, Butch didn't have control of his dog.
Sorry to hear about his discipline methods.

a couple weeks ago at Black Rock when it was skim ice someone let their dog off lead and the poor thing went through the ice.   Watertown FD came out and did a rescue.

I forgot to mention the rule we made for other peoples dogs on the ice.  You must ALWAYS call strange dogs by the name of "shep" I have no idea how or why we came up with the name, but it works really well.  ;D

walts, theres a company that makes a decent harness that can be used for pulling the sleds.  I can't remember where I got mine, but it was less than $50.  Its padded on the inside and pretty heavy duty.  It fits on over the dogs fleece coat.  Made by Four paws company.

Elcap,

Do you use any foot protection on your dogs paws?

If yoy trim the fur between the pads ice won't build up . My dog loves the time out and all my fishing friends like to spoil him with food while on the ice.Just seems like quality time for him when I get home he sleeps for a day giveing my wife a break.
