Question on tip ups

I am a very inexperienced ice fisherman. I have seen these tip ups for sale. What type of fish are these used for? I have only fished for pan fish using plastic poles and I assume tip ups are used for bigger fish?

Generally Pike and Walleye around here but they get used for Muskie and Lakers in other parts of the Ice belt. I use them for Jumbo perch as well.

We use ours for big perch some times. We only keep them 11" and over and get quite a few on the tip-ups. Spread properly in the right area they can tell you when a school moves in or turns on.

How are you guys using them for perch?  Just sending them down with minnows?

Don't forget largemouth, seems I catch more of those on tipups than anything else.

Pickerel are the main fish caught by tip-ups in PA...atleast in the poconos
