Hi folks, anyone have any spinning reel recommendations for perch rods and walleye rods. Is there any benefit of purchasing a reel separately over buying a rod/reel combo?

Siena's aren't a bad reel but the drags are incredibly temperature sensitive imo. Hard to find a truly bad reel unless you buy a combo or go incredibly cheap.

Any shimano in a 500 series are good reels.

Walleye reels...a Quantum Five-0 and a Sienna SNa 25. Pannie reels...the ones that come with the Genz spring bobber series. Really surprised at these...single ball bearing but smooth as heck and have never had any freeze ups. Not a big Genz fan but these at about $35...impressive.

I like the pflueger presidents , for perch and eyes size 25 will do nicely even for lakers and manufactured in Ohio
I do have some long stem 13s they function pretty well for perch

Don't go too cheap and just buy the reel to pair up with the rod of your choice, Reed's, however, has a nice combo of a Pflueger President, sz. 20, paired with a Fenwick Elite Tech rod, pick your action. I could fish with that setup.

A lot of combo comes with a cheap junky reel even if you find the rod that you want and it only comes in a combo.
There are some higher priced combo's and you start getting into decent reels and rods altogether. Combo's are a good way to get started and some even have some lines on them so you're ready to go right away.
Once you figured out what you really want, then piecing it all together is far better as a person preference.
I may be a Shimano fan, but the one reel I've seen this year that really impress me this year is Abu Garcia Revo series spinning reel. Something about a carbon body reel frame that is less cold to the touch. Price point they're on spot. Likewise Diawa are offering a lot of their spinning reels with the LT designation for Light and Tough having carbon body reel frames. Then again, I'm drooling at reels over that $100 price point.

I still have some of the reels from when I was a kid- They only make 2 kinds these days- good reels and great reels! A reel used to be a lifetime purchase, and a major expense- now we can all have pretty much whatever we want- or at least we sure all have more than we need. I think that unless you fish really light line, the drag on most is good enough. Heck- It is only the last 10 years that I used a reel at all for ice fishing.

Daiwa LT reels in the smallest sizes, with great drags and smoothness. 2-3lb fluoro require a smooth drag when fishing for perch and a 10# cat bites!

I like the TICA SS500 Very smooth drag. The president is also good.
