Cleaning Hut Fabric
« on: Feb 19, 2018, 06:37 PM »
Unfortunately I'll be packing my ice gear away in the next few days, does anyone have any advice on cleaning the hut fabric. I have clam Kenai thermal and is really like to run it through a washing machine before I store it in a tote. Any have suggestions?

My suggestion is no washing machine needed. Setup outside and spray off. Bring inside and dry completely! Go Clam! ;D

I agree with Idahoice, if it's really dirty maybe a mild dish detergent and a brush for bad spots.

is it dirty or stink? they do make tent cleaning supplies.
i had to get rid of one because i let a smoker smoke in it and it ruined it. couldn't wash the stink out of so i sold it to a smoker who couldn't smell it.

i don't do any thing to mine and leave them ready to go for next season.

I just store mine as it leaves the ice and it's ready for the next time.  I will warn you about one thing: Do not store the hut in a barn or infrequently used garage.  Mice will make a nest in between the folds and chew holes in the fabric. :'(

Agree on the no washing machine. Just make sure it’s nice and dry, when you put it away. And mice can definitely be a issue.

A tip for keeping mice away is to put some Bounce dryer sheets in the shanty when you store it.  It seems to have kept the mice out of mine and the shanty smells good when opened up in the spring.

Highly recommend "Tuff Stuff" multi-purpose aerosol foam cleaner (fabric, carpet, and vinyl)- you can pick it up at Walmart or automotive stores.  I'm OCD and use it on everything - truck interior seats, carpet, furniture cushions, sneakers, golf shoes, ect.  I call it "Magic in a Can"  My wife or pets mess it up - it works on everything.  It doesn't cook,  fold or iron clothes - sorry!

The stronger the detergent you use, the more likely you are to wash out the water repellent.  Same goes for your outerwear.  Nikwax works pretty well for re-waterproofing if it needs a good soaking.
