Looking to buy Tip-Downs
« on: Dec 27, 2010, 03:05 PM »
Last year I bought a couple tip-downs made by Wood & Ice, Horseheads, NY and recently been having a hard time finding a shop that sells them.  I have heard that they are no longer being made.  Does anyone know a shop that still has some of them?  If so can you send me a PM with their contact info. Thanks.

I bought a tip down at Ackley & Sons a couple years ago, I used it as a template and made my own. I know I made them cheaper than buying 2 of them.

What do they look like? I picked up a couple at the whitney point crappie derby a couple years ago and recently got a new set and was going to post the 2 I have on the for sale board since my wife got me a milita membership for xmas, if they're the same and you're trying to put together a matching set I would be willing to part with them.

Irish Jigger, I appreciate the pic.  How do they hold up in the wind?

I didn't post a pic, but I can if you're interested. They are prety heavy duty and depending on how much weight you have on them the wind doesn't mess with them too much.

The rod end is a solid metal rod and they have the schooley reel so you can adjust the drag with the screw on the reel.

And there is a large washer on the upper part of the handle sandwiched between 2 rubber O rings that you can slide up and down the handle to help adjust the balance.

Are they a match? My friends and I bought them from a local guy on the ice at the derby in '05 I think.

Yes, those are what I want to purchase.  I will buy your used ones, but I still would like to have another two to have a complete set of five.  Anybody else know were I can buy them?

Irish Jigger, those tip downs are,
"Wood and Ice" professional tip downs. They were made in Horseheads NY
I have 8 sets, 4 large (as in the picture) and 4 small.  They are the best I have ever seen and super hard to find.
Reportedly the guy making them passed away and no body is reproducing these.
I like how the rod is formed and finished.  Quality stuff.

I just bought a couple of these.

I saw a guy using them a few on Hemlock years back. Very slick and compact to transport.Well designed.

The above posted picture of the tip down can be found at tip downs .com. Just purchased one myself, love the fact that the height of the tipdown is adjustable from around 25 to 36 inches above the ice. Due to recent car accident,my mobility has become limited(loss use of my legs) so aside from my jigging pole,I can put two tip downs up to an arms lenth away, reach out and reel(pull) in the fish with out leaving my seat. Its tough enough to have to rely on someone to take you fishing(driving)assist getting onto atv ,setting up hut and drill youir holes. At least when i get situated,I dont need to bother my fishing partner any further.

My wife and mother got together and got me a set of these for x-mas a couple years ago also. I haven't used them much but I have noticed if you use mono on them it has to stay tight on the reel or it will tangle and that is a crazy mess to try and fix while on the ice. They are a bit pricey but like you said RG they pack up nice and are easy to transport and set up and with the rod stored inside the tube it protects the tip so no suprise broken rod tips when you get out on the ice.

This is all I carry any more for tipdowns.  I've caught everything from crappie to walleye on them.  They are a blast to use, easy to transport and set up. easy to see from a distance and versatile.  See the black tip at the back end of the rod?  That's a removable cap.  You can take it off and add splitshots there to balance your presentations, so you are not just limited to fatheads.  I dunk bass shiners all the time with no problem
They are probably about $30 each, so a spread of five is costly, but you know what?  What are you really out there for?  To have fun right?  These add a lot of fun to the experience.  Money well spent.
