Ice Check
« on: Jan 25, 2010, 04:26 PM »
Just thought it might be a good idea to post a thread where we can all let each other know how much ice their is wherever we go for the next week or so. Given all this WARM weather and rain, it would only help if we keep each other updated on the ice situation. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated by me, and I imagine the rest of you. ;D

Buddy of mine fished Carry Bay today and said that there was still a good 12-14". I went out to the Sandbar today and pulled the Hillbilly Hotel off. I didn't want to risk it. I would say that there was at least 8-10" of good ice with 2-3" of water on top. Pretty fun pulling in the shanty today in the windgusts, kept trying to pull the 4-wheeler around. I will give it a few days a put it back out. I would love to know how Carmi Fared, we are planning on heading there next Monday.

I was thinking this rain would be good to knock the snow pack down and expose the ice below so it will "make" better. The forecast this week looks favorable to harden things back up after the thaw.

I was sort of planning to hit Bomo on Saturday but with all the chat about lousy "catching" over there I might goto St Catherine instead. Assume good ice over there before this thaw?

The middle of St. Catherine was sketchy before the thaw, be carefull.

Chuck: Thanks for the update. I am re-thinking my plans and maybe Chittenden Dam this weekend? Seems like a crap shoot to find safe ice right now

Got out on the ice at green dump to chek the shanty today. It's on pretty shakey ground, but still there. Going to move it fri morning. Took a chance leaving it out there sunday. Stupid move on my part.

Fished some today....did lots of driving looking and ice checking

Cowbanks - 7" solid black ice, no snow, very slick.....fishing was poor....small perch....nobody was really catching anything

Dillenbecks - 12" of solid black ice....the access area shoreline was virtually underwater after someone with a pick-up drove on

St Annes Shrine (Isle LaMotte) - Nobody fishing or venturing out....had clearly broken up recently...spots of open water

Tabor Point (Swanton) - 4-5" of refrozen ice.   Every shanty except one was half submerged.  Only one guy ventured out.   Dead coyote on the ice near the access.

Coon Pt (Alburg) - Tons of guys fishing, lots of ATVs on the ice....I didn't venture out but didn't look like anyone was catching much in the bay.

A good 10" on Hortonia right now. Stay away from the dam though, that was wide open after the thaw and might not be safe
