Title: LED lights for crappie after dark???
Post by: Fishsleeprepeat on Feb 09, 2019, 12:51 PM
Has anyone tried the green led lights for crappies after dark? In the past, I have fished the last hour of daylight and a couple hours after dark with good results. This year however, the bite has been tough for me. I am marking a lot of fish. I’m getting a lot of looks, but I am getting only a few fish to hit. I have been changing up my presentation and jigs constantly to see what will make them bite. Maybe I have just been fishing on the wrong days. I am thinking about picking up a light to see if that will help on the days when the bite is tough to attract more aggressive fish. Has anyone tried lights with any success?

Yep. If you fish a spot that has a bite after dark it's a winner

Anybody ever used these for nighttime trout fishing? I think it would be cool to see them swarm bait in shallow water with these

Yes, I use a crappie light to fish for trout out of the boat at night on Justus Lake, it works great.  We just anchor put the light over the side of the boat and lower it down about 5' or so.  The longer its down the more bugs and bait fish swarm around it and its game on.  Just pitch your bait out and let it fall and swing under the light and fish on.

I've never tried it ice fishing but I'm guessing it should work.

I’ve tried a few times but I haven’t seen a noticeable difference yet.

I’ve tried it a few yards away as well as right over it.

Well we found out the light works like this. I turned on my might-d lite and pointed it down the hole and set it on my chair. I was consistently marking and catching fish. My buddy 3 feet away nothing. Then he turned on his light on his phone and angled it over the hole. Boom fish showed up and fed. Yes use the light

I’ve heard it depends on the presence of a specific plankton in a body of water to be super effective.

This lake is full of zooplankton. Was all over the green light.  We even caught gills and they say they don't feed after dark or at least not much.

Bin a firm believer in green light on  open water for years now . Have had some really good nights on hot summer days . Was article in pa game news this month talking about it. Wanted to try it this year for smelt after dark , but never had a chance .

I got a similar one off of amazon. It throws off some serious green light. The lake I fished was about 16 feet deep where I used it. Thinking it might have been too bright at that depth

No way. We fished 14 ft water and used bright lights straight down the hole and pounded them. Couple nights later used the green light same action.

How far down do u let it sink? The model I have sinks and makes the light point up. And in the summer should I float it or let it sink?

We had it down 2 or 3 feet then moved it to about 10 then back to about 2.

I have only used the lights during the spring when the crappie are starting to spawn.  I will have to try it through the ice at night. I may have to wait until next year. We may only have good ice to get another time or two.It sounds like most guys have good luck .

From what ive heard you only want the light down 2 ft.the bottom of the ice acts like a huge mirror reflecting the light down attracting plankton, then baitfish then target species.

That makes sense.  Thanks for the tip.
