Went to the winni today. brought my brand new 4" HT hand auger I just bought. Lost the fish of a life time, because its head wouldn't even fit up the 4" hole. Then broke thorough on my way out. About ten feet from shore water up to my waist. Drove home naked and put my ice fishing gear in the attic. Done sir done! see you next year
-
Sorry to hear man :( what kind of fish did you have on?
-
Sorry about the swim, cusky. That's gotta stink. You got out without serious damage, that's a good thing.
I would bring your new auger down from the attic & put it in a garage sale this summer. I'm guessing you're going to up size for next season? ;)
-
You can't end that way. Get the stuff back out and do it again.

Sorry to hear...that's why 4" in any aspect in life doesn't get you far ;)
-
That's a tough day - sorry to hear. Tough way to end the season too... hate ending anything on a down note... so I am heading out this weekend... assuming there is good ice... but I only got skunked... not dunked. Glad you made it out OK... Good luck if you change your mind and make one more try.
-
Glad you ended up okay, but I had to laugh..."drove home naked"I wish you had gotten pulled over on the way home....would have been priceless.... ::)

It actually happen to a friend, but he was sitting in his truck in his underwear trying to dry things out. Trooper stopped and simply said, I know exactly what happened, just wanted to add to your embarrassment.

Sorry about the PW....a few of my friends are the 'other PW' ;D

Well, look at it this way: At least it wasn't over your head and you are still alive!
As for the 4" auger...I've fished in 4" auger holes, and they are probably only useful for panfish and smelt. With that said, I have caught crappies that would not have fit through a 4" hole. My minimum is 6", as a pretty big fish can fit through a 6" hole...but this year I bought an 8" because I've cut it close! Both of my augers are Nils, and overall, I prefer the 6" in terms of balancing weight, ease of cutting, and size.

Tough day, Cusky. Glad you only went in to your waist!
Bart, that's funny!

glad u made it off ok ! was just thinkin how thats a really small hole on a really big lake...... lol

at 72 sq miles of surface area, thats apprx 2 Billion square ft...
a 4" hole is apprx .342 square feet in area...
so theoretically you could fit almost 6 Billion 4" holes in Winni...
or a 4" hole is 0.000000017% of the area of the lake...

So if we use 8-10" augers... how many holes do we have to drill this weekend to have ice out for opening day? ;D
-
What area were you fishing?
Not that it matters, since the season ends on Monday.
That's why I always keep a change of clothes in my truck, particularly in late winter.
There may still be a few smaller waterways that you can fish, provided you can get out safely.
-
I would love to see a fish too big for that hole... What was it?
-
Ouch!
-
Glad you made it out safely and have to say been there done that !
-
Sorry to hear about your PW, but good to hear u made out safe ...

I think 4 inches is way to small. My minimum is 6 inches, and I think that is even to small. I have an 8 inch auger I got at the beginning of the season at bass pro shop, and I've seen pike that could barley fit through an 8 inch hole!
-
yeah im definitly sticking with a 10 inch hole for the rest of my ice fishing career. lost one of the biggest bass of my life because i used someones already drilled 6 inch hole. took so long to get its head turned up the hole and then it snapped right when its mouth broke the water :-\. but glad to hear you made it out okay!
-
Glad your ok. Heck of a way to end it. Give it time and you'll be shaking your head laughing.

yeah, what he said

Ya I was a little pissed off last night. I was in gilford. Well i got the best fish story with no way to prove it. It was a monster laker. Pulled it all the way up from 60 FOW. After about 5 min of trying to get its head turned up the hole I realized it wasn't happening. So I tighten my drag and set my rod on the ice and put my foot on it thinking I was going to drill annother hole touching my old hole. As soon as I started drilling he/she took off and broke the line. As far as going swimming went. That sucked but it was my own stupidity. I was walking on an ice bridge with water about 20 feet on both sides of me. Hitting a small bass pond tomorrow. Thanks for the suport
-
Again, sorry about the dip. But another lesson to learn (IMO) is, there was no reason to tighten your drag. :nono: If you got him to the hole, your drag was definitely, not too loose.
Glad you're getting back on the horse tomorrow. ;D
-
Could you have this much fun in any office cube? NO .
-
Glad you made it out safely and only got wet. It may have been a cheap lesson. Be sure to hit your bass pond and hope you do well. Can't go all summer on a down note. You now have a pretty good fish story. 4" on Winni, you may want to rethink that.
-
Well atleast you had a good excuse to drive nekkid :)
-
That's why I always keep a change of clothes in my truck, particularly in late winter.
2X I keep a set from day one to end of Ice. I also keep a towel to dry off, should carry a blanket too but in the ford ranger that about takes up all the room. Late season I am always mentally prepared to take a swim on the way in. Conditions change so much from morning to afternoon.
Take care out there the lake is going fast at this point. There is still good ice but things are a changin' and in days not weeks.
