WYOiceman...just wondering...have you ever fished Bull Lake and if so, what's considered a large mac there? I've been reluctant to try it for a couple of reasons, one being I'm a 4-wheeler  guy and from what I've been told, it's accessible only by snow-machine in winter...just curious.

I've only fished it a couple of times, and did'nt get anything big, but I've heard of 15-20 pound mac's coming out of there. Last year when I was there a 4-wheeler would have worked fine. There was very little snow on the lake, and you can drive to the shoreline pulling your trailer in several areas.
I've been told to be very careful as you go further up the lake; as you will almost always find weak ice in some areas.

Does anyone have any info on Bull lake this year???

several knowledgeable individuals have let it slip that they belive this is where the next state record will come from.  they say they know of 40 plus pound macs getting caught there.  anyone with information: your help on the subject would be appreciated.  we are thinking of making a trip there this year.

Hey, ex-Lt here, I've never put my boat in and only bought a res tag out of curiosity to go over this summer and scope it out. Two important things, first I've heard that the ice is weak in some spots in winter  :woot:and 2d, I've not checked but as I recall, it doesn't even open to ice fishing til the 1st December. I will check and get back with you and yes, some hellaciuous 35-40 pounders regularly come outta there   :flex:as well as Dinwoody on toward Dubois. I plan to hit it this year. I talked to one of the Indian Wardens and he told me you could go in with only 4wd pickup.

It has been a long time since I have been on Bull Lake.  But there are some really nice fish there.  I dont remember where the springs are, but like everyone has said the ice is unstable in alot of spots.  So I would use caution when using a 4 wheeler and talk to some of the locals on the ice, they should be able to point out weak points and spings on the lake.

no, bull lake is a little farther south of torrey and dinwoody lakes.  it's the biggest of the three, but i've heard good things about all three.  looks like we need to put them on our travel list, spud

The 3 lakes you drove by were Torrey Lake, Ring Lake and Trail Lake.  Torrey and Trail are both good lake trout fishing, we have pulled out 20+ pounders from both.  The best ling fishing I have ever had was at Ring Lake, we pulled some monsters out of there.  But carefull on Ring Lake there are springs on the east side of the lake by the shore, there have been people find those the hard way.  Thankfully it is not that deep.
I was up there elk hunting a couple weeks ago and saw the ice starting to set on the 3 lakes, so if you want to try those soon they should be safe enough pretty soon.

I've fished Bull on 3 occasions, but on open water.  Caught many decent macs and bo's nothing over 22".  I'm sure some hogs dwell there.

I haven't fished Bull lake in about 15 years, I did not really like it beacuse of the ice.  We stopped going when a truck fell though next to us.  But I have never fished dinwoody, always wanted to but never got up there to do it.

I've never fished Torrey, Ring, or Trail lakes, but I really like the Idea of big macs and monster ling.
Any tips you are willing to give about fishing the mac's and ling would be greatly appriciated: how deep to fish?, jigs or plain minnows?, lake hot spots? Sounds like some early ice up there maybe. Any new word on the ice situation?
Thanks and GOOD LUCK THIS WINTER.
