Title: 08' MINNESOTA GET TOGETHER
Post by: Skipper on Sep 05, 2007, 08:06 PM
We want all Iceshanty.com members to attend this gathering regardless of where they are from or how long they have been a member. Feel free to bring a friend with because Iceshanty.com always welcomes new members. If you don't have transportation on the ice you can "carpool" with a guy with a 4x4. If you lack the current fancy gear, you will fit right in. ;)

Please make sure you have a current fishing licence with you and you understand Minnesota fishing laws. This is not a derby or a contest. No admission fee will be collected by Iceshanty.com. All we expect of you is to come and have a good time. Food and drink will not be provided, so please plan accordingly. This gathering is not going to be fancy, just a bunch of guys drilling holes and swapping stories. 8)

Here are the details so far....

Date: Saturday, January 19th

Lake: Mille Lacs, Mille Lacs County

Place: Appledoorns Sunset Bay Resort

Time: 10am we meet on land at the resort.

You guys have a favorite resort? I know a few of us liked using Rocky Reef's road system, but there are some big changes happening up there. I think they still own the bar, but I don't know if they are going to do sleeper shacks and roads this year. ???

I could call up there, unless you guys have a better idea. There are quite a few other resorts on that lake.....

Oh I forgot to write my other suggestion and that is to have a get together at Eelpout festival and have a IceShanty team for total tonage of Eelpout!  Yes I know most of Eelpout is just for drinking and partying, but there are a few fools out there just trying to catch Big Pout!  ( BTW I was not that successful with only 3 eelpout last winter)

Nodaks are welcome, but they can keep their old mill to themselves!!!!!

Why don't we simplify?

Iceshanty.com is having a get together in Minnesota and all members are welcome! The best part of Minnesota is there is plenty of ice for everyone!

Hey fellas, just moved up to the Cities last summer from Iowa City. I'd definately be interested in getting together weither it be the iceshanty.com get together or a get together for just this forum.

I've got plenty of paid time off saved up for some trips out on the ice this year. Just let me know when and where! :)

p.s. Glad to finally be off that Iowan ice!

We need to whittle out a date here....

The last Saturday in Jan is out for me. We should count out super bowl weekend too.

Do we want to do this on a Saturday or Sunday?

I think we should try to keep it in mid January though, if we wait too long the fishing will crap out. We can head out to the flats in February, but that is quite a hike from anywhere.

Last weekend is out for me too, as I'm heading to the jaycee's tournie on Gull.  But I'm open to most any other weekend. 2nd or 3rd weekend in jan seems best for me.

Since i'm hauling up from the TC, I'll probably make it a weekend, so either day works for me as well...

Saturday, January 12

Saturday, January 19

Saturday, February 2 (ground hog day) we could pull a fish out of a hole, and if it sees its shadow we have 6 more weeks of good ice!

I vote January 19th, give us a few weeks in between the holidays and the get together. I'll need a break from work by then anyway!

I'm completely happy with any of those other weekends if someone has any conflict with the 19th. I for one don't ever have anything on my calendar more than a month or two in advance anyway. ;)

The 12th works best for me, as it gives me a weekend break between trips up north, but all 3 are ok.

I can't believe I am writing this on 10/25. It ain't ice fishing yet! I miss you guys, how was your summer? I grew up with a lake cabin on the south side of Mille Lacs. I would love to fish with you guys in January. I normally fish "Sloppy Joes Bar" a gravel bar a few miles out from the southern shore. I go out of Jerry Brandt's. Man I have done a lot of fishing over the years over by Rocky Reef. We need to go in January if you want walleye!

There is a group coming up from Iowa on the weekend of the 19th. I understand that they are interested in attending.

Does anyone have a reasonable objection to having the 1st annual gathering on Saturday January 19th on Mille Lacs Lake?

Woofta! I had a close call just there. Remembered the family Christmas was going to be in January this year... had to call my parents to be sure the 19th wasn't that weekend. Turns out that I am, in fact, free on the weekend of the 19th.

Not sure where Lyman's is???  Are you thinking of Lybacks?  If so, they have neither a bar or restaurant.

We have a couple of different places within a mile of us by Ice road that have bar and restaurants.

We may have covered this already but any recommendations on a place to stay the night before/after? I don't need anything fancy, just a clean/cheap motel.

Also, do you imagine we'll be driving out to the spot? I personally don't own a seld... I'm moved up from Iowa in August and haven't needed to drive/4wheel/sled out on the ice for many many years. Mille Lacs is a little different than our ponds down south. Could be a MUCH longer hike. ;)

If you are looking for something to plug into map quest, try Isle or Wahkon. The south side of the lake is about 90-120 minutes from Minneapolis.  You would come up HWY 65 if you are from the SE.

A good place to stay... Hmmmm? There are a few Motels around. Perhaps a few of you guys should pool your dough and rent a sleeper shack? The Casino is a good spot, but it is on the other side of the lake. You can try one of my favorite sites for lodging info if you wish>>> www.exploreminnesota.com (http://www.exploreminnesota.com)

As far as getting out there, the resort we leave from will have suitable ice roads. Unless the ice is slushy or very rough, you should have no trouble driving your car out (assuming we have safe ice thickness). If not, I'm sure me or several others with 4x4 trucks would be willing to give you a ride out. At that part of the winter, I don't see us fishing the flats anyhow.

We need a meeting place!!!!!!!!

LYBACKS

APPLEDOORNS

any other suggestions?

At this point we only need a place to access the lake and iceroads. There is usually a small fee involved with ice road access, but it is never too much. We need to get this thing going here! It is December 3 today!

gota think about parking off the ice too..

I do know Lybacks has enough parks on dry land for 100-150 cars-trucks with trailers
not sure what Appledoorns has yet..

We have had this conversation a few times now.  Now my mother-in-law said she was going to come stay with us, so I might be interested in splitting a house if I go.  How much is a month rental?

lol Haywood

In all seriousness, I'd be interested in splitting a house too. I snor but at least it's another person to go halves'ies with.

Update:
Actually, looking at the reservation list it appears that only a few houses remain for that weekend. Lets get chating and figure out if we can make this happen ASAP! :)

We have opened up our access to Wheeler's and Snowmobiles.  We have a good start to our road and trails blazed Doe Island Reef and to Shaw's Reef.  We have punched many holes and have found a steady 8 inches of ice.  Our plan is to have a couple of our 4 hole houses out in the bay by this weekend on perch spots.

Tony Roach and a couple of his guys were out this afternoon and got a few perch.  They kept a couple of them for dinner.

Perch are being caught off of Doe Island Reef.  Some size to them but we need to sort threw them to get eaters.  13-15 feet of water has been best.  Small jigs with waxies.

Walleye's are out in the deeper water off of the reefs and mud.  30-32 feet of water.  Small Jigging Spoons with minnow heads.  These 2 fish came from 31 feet of water and were caught with a 1/16 Go Devil and a minnow head.  He also picked up a limit of eaters from the same depth.

Hey, new to the forum and I could use some fishing buddies, especially those that know how to fish better than me and are willing to share their knowledge!

I'm wondering if it's worth hooking up with you guys if I would have to leave by 3:30pm or so?  What time do you guys think we'll make it out to the ice after meeting up?

First, congrats on the new kid!

I haven't looked up the resort yet so I'm not sure where that is on the lake.  I'm in East Bethel, so we are practically neighbors, you could tell me how far I am away!  I can get to the south side in around 1.25 hours.

We'll.. here's your first lesson.

1. Drill a hole
2. Drop your line
3. Open the cooler
4. Crack a beer
5. Shoot the

You're now as good of Ice Fisherman as I half the anglers on this forum ;)

Well, I'm capable of most of those!  It took me over 2 hours to tear apart my auger and get it going last week, so I almost failed #1.

Sweet, you can pick me up on the way.  Paul can probably post the best directions, but they are on the east side of the lake, north of Isle.   If you even need to go fishing, let me know.

One more thing about grillin and I'll shut-up about it.  You may have heard about my religious experience this summer.  I'm here to set the story straight!  We were having a picnic down by the river.  Grilling apple brats.  They go good with beer too.  Some thought I saw Jesus just because I yelled out his name.  However, a piece of hot apple went down my shorts and blistered me!  Let that be a warning to you.

I will bring my quad too.. If I ever get it back from the shop! They have had it since Nov 24, and I guess they have no intention of getting to it any time soon! :%$#!: Mille Lacs Motorsports is at the top of my list right now. >:( They said it was a quick job and they would get it right in. >:( I am going to have to go get it and bring it somewhere else. :%$#!:

I will also bring my Shap DX 3000, but it is pretty small. Is anyone still interested in sharing a sleeper? I would be willing to throw some cash at it. I wouldn't stay the night, but It would be worth it to have a place to warm up. I have a Jiffy 8'' too, and the rest of my regular gear will come with. I will also load my GPS with some good local structure to hit.

Dont forget the beer!

You need to plan these things better. My wife is due AUGUST 26, far from any important outdoor activity. August is too hot to fish during the day and the mosquitoes will fly off with you at night. Next winter I will be allowed to have EIGHT lines down! ;D

Will have 2 sleds, Eskimo QF3 shelter (This seats two, and we can squeeze in a 3rd on a bucket if its really ugly out.) All the other ice toys as well.

If we can make it do we just bring the truck & all the ice fishing gear Jigsticks, tipups or just jigsticks? Should a guy bring the 4-wheelers. In WI right now there is so much slush. We buried the quads yesterday by Rhinelander, WI. 10" ice, 6" slush, 12" snow, not pretty. Thanks, Pat

Count me in. I'll have my typical gear with me; a portable that'll hold 2 people (3 if you toss the gear on the ice), a few rods, my vex, ect.

It looks like there are only 2 units from Appledorn's available for that weekend. Anyone looking to reserve one for the weekend? I'd go in on it.. Looks the available houses are 6 holers with room to sleep 4. If not, no big deal. Send me a PM if you're interested (or if you've already reserved one and need an extra guy to split bill)

Sorry for the delay in getting all of this posted.  I had some computer problems that prevented me from logging into this site.

Hard Ice,

Our roads are in great shape.  We are driving just about everything out, including 3/4 ton trucks with wheelhouses.  Our road network goes all over Doe Island Reef and extends out to 2 mile gravel and then south down to the north side of Hennepin Island.  I'm not going to kid you guys, with all of the small perch and forage in the lake right now, the bite has really been tough.

Skipper:

I'm throwing these questions at you since you put this expedition together.....

Do you have any specific plans / thoughts on "how the day will work"?

All stay in a given area - ie based on info from Appledorns? Everyone fish where they want?

I have been on the lake all of 2-3-4 times - I don't know it. Am looking at the DNR S half map
now, and there is a whole lot of space between the spots Paul W. talked about having roads - ie
Doe Island vs Hennipen Island vs 2mile reef - much less anywhere else.

Not having alot of experience on that water, its the last place I want to get lost on - espec.
if it gets dark or was to get foggie.

Any plans for grilling, etc? Anyone bringing food to share?

Paul W:

Paul W:

What do your road passes cost?

Thanks

UG

1) No, I have no plan whatsoever :-\ Drill holes and catch fish I hope. I am not much of a party planner! :D I just thought we could meet and put some real names and faces to these screen names. This is our first time, next year will be a better show!

2) I think we can base our day on Paul's recommendations of where to fish. If we all want to split up and do our own thing after we meet, its a free country! Anyone who wants to stick by me is free to do. If the group wants to move, I will surely move with it. I am in charge of nothing, I am little more than a helper/janitor here on IS.com ;D

3)Stick to the roads and you will be fine! No worries! I'm sure you can jump in with someone too, at least you wont be lost alone! Unless there is a severe ice fog, there is nothing to worry about. Even if we get fog, my GPS will bring us back the way we came.

4) Does anyone want to grill? I'm fine with a pail lunch, but I may be able to donate a few steaks to cook if the fishing is slow. If someone has a portable grill to bring with it would help. I will donate propane to our cause too.

How hardcore are you guys? It is gonna be -10F for a high on Saturday with 10mph wind. :-\ It will be around -17F when we hit the lake. We can always hope that the weather man is wrong.....

By my guesstimating, we are looking at a -35F wind chill sat morning. I don't know about you guys, but that is pushing my limits of comfort. I was hoping for mid 20s so we could grill, drink, and BS out on the ice. It will be pretty hard to do that if we are huddled in portables by the pair. This is crud.... at least we have ice!

My vote is Postpone NOT cancel!!!! We had this coming you know, Jan in MN is like this.

Well, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade (or blow serious windchill on it), but weather.com is currently showing a high of -1!   I don't even want to hear what the windchill is going to be.  This is definitely a social event for me, and I don't own a fancy Ice Armor suit.  I'd freeze my butt.  The forecast could still change by Saturday, but I'm not sure by how much.

Being cold and having fish with a case of lockjaw doesn't sound like the fun time I was looking forward to.  So, I guess if we are voting for a postponement, I hate to say it but I'll add a vote.

that's better than accuweathers -6 for a high.  This past weekend would have been perfect.  I will go if we have it, but my vote goes for rescheduling it as well.

Friday Night
Colder. Mostly cloudy in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Areas of blowing and drifting snow in the evening. Lows 15 below to 20 below zero. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Wind chill readings 33 below to 43 below zero.

With the new snow and wind, there could be white outs, not to mention that these kind of wind chills are dangerous - any kind of wet event or mechanical failure could be life threatening. It's not worth it. I also vote to post-pone.

I guess we have an agreement. :'( Bummer as it may be, -45 below windchill is down right dangerous. 20mph winds will be blowing snow in our faces like a sand blaster! I am glad to see everyone has the same idea. We can let those Iowegians prove how tough they are!

How would you guys feel about eliminating most of the chances of this happening again? We could push it out into March and chase those football sized perch! Once the season closes, that lake becomes a ghost town. A couple weeks after things quiet down, the perch bite can really get going. Average temps are in the 30s or even 40s in mid march and we will have 3 feet of top quality ice beneath us. Some of the best fishing I have had on that lake has been in early spring. Sometimes I even leave my shack home. My best of all time perch trip was in mid April, but the ice is pretty scary by then.

Thoughts on the March idea......I've never been on some real quality jumbo's - so that has got my attention.

March Weekends: 1/2, 8/9, 15/16, 22/23, 29/30

Easter (coming very early this year) is on the 23rd.

Also have #1 son getting hitched on the 8th - so that one is out for me.

All the others are do-able at this point. My pref. would be the 15/16, as
end of March the ice could be getting a little iffy - all depends on what
we get for spring....

The first weekend in March is the only one that would work for me, but don't let that have any influence on when you have it.  If I don't make it, you can have a drink for poor old Haywood, who is miserably on a 12 day fishing trip down on Lake of the Ozarks while you guys are having all of the fun  ;D

Zero intrest. :-\

Everyone was exited about getting together in January, but it seems that much of the intrest has died. It is too bad we had to pick the coldest day of the year to have our event. It is still up in the air if anyone wants to grab it.

I think we still have plenty of time to have an informal met and greet in March.

I'm no leader

I am just the janitor!!!!

March 1,8,15,22, anything past that and we may be pushing our luck. I would say the 8th or the 15th would be a good choice. Bring an ATV if you have one, the ice can start to get slushy at that point. We can hope for "no shack" weather so we can BS and talk smart. No weather is guaranteed, but march is a better bet than January for a nice day with a good bite. ;D

I will disclose to you, I have not been fishing Mille Lacs very much.

I know a few places to start, but I make no promises!

I think Mille Lacs sucks tooo!!

March 15 is a good date. Any thirds to that.

We can fish anywhere you guys want. I would prefer a lake that someone knows well. In March, our options are limited to pannies, so keep that in mind. A hot walleye or pike bite does us NO good when the season is closed. I am sick of Mille Lacs, and have been for years. The grumpy tourists and the "ice road barons" are enough to make me pull my hair out. Does anyone has a smaller lake, or a lake that we could get into some fish near the launch? I know that transportation on the ice was a problem with some members in our previous discussion. I like to fish Ann Lake off of HWY 47 near Oglive, but that lake can be fickle and that ice goes to  heck in a hurry. Borden By Garrison can be good too. There are a ton of good crappie lakes by Brainerd too.

My vision of this outing isn't to catch a bunch of fish. I just want to meet you guys and bring "Team Minnesota" into the real world. I like beer too. ;D

We can still fish Mille Lacs if you guys want, but I would like to discuss other options too.

The crappie bite can be somewhat crappy at mid day, do we want to meet after lunch?

Ok guys....

I am eyeballing Mapquest & Lake Finder as I type.....I show a "N Long Lake" E of 371 and Gull Lk, the same is W of Hwy 25 and just S of a Round Lk. I see a little town called Merrifield - but no road labeled Hwy 3.

I assume I got the right lake, but Lake Finder only shows a public access on the W bay, by 371.

Can some one confirm if this is the right one.

I will need to see what I can do to swap on-call w/ someone at work in order to make this.

about three years ago they changed from hwy 25 to county road #3
I live 1 1/2 miles from the lake and there is a landing on merrifield bay.
you have the right lake just go towards the train bell resort and you'll see the signs for the landing.

Just follow HWY 25 up on the map from Brainerd until you get to Merrifeild. It is the same road that goes up through Becker, Foley, and Pierz.

If anyone wants to carpool with me, that would be fine. I live less than a mile off of US 169 just north of Milaca. I have an X-cab long box pickup, so space for gear should not be an issue. I would be about 30 miles north of Elk River or about 40 miles north of Rogers.

I will start a sign up thread so we can get a better idea of who is coming. I would not expect a crowd. I wouldn't ask the owner of the wagon wheel to put an extra waitress on just for us. :-\. If anyone wants to go, just post yes or maybe on that thread. It will be stickied above this thread in Minnesota general.

Just got back a little bit ago from the lake there wasn't to much water on the ice after last nights freezing temps but when you come off the landing make sure you stay to the left side cause theres a big hole in the center i'm not sure if it goes down all the way i didn't want to drive though it to find out..

also they are still driving on the lake but my quads loaded if you choose not to drive out which can be a very long walk ..

Do i need to stick signs out where you are to turn or not ??

my plan is to leave here around 7 am and hit the lake around 830-900 AM i will check back to see iof anybody replys this..

We will be going out on quads for sure...

I will be leaving Milaca around 9:00, so I should be out there by 10:00 to 10:30. If anyone wants to meet up with us early and do some "prefish", call my cell.

(320..

Hey Hardice, do you have a cell? If you dont mind, PM me your number so I can find you when we get there. What part of the lake to you think you will be on?

We will be on two new polaris sportsmans. One is green and one is blue, the blue one is an X2 model. We will be fishing out of or pulling a fish trap voyager.
