Title: 11/28/09 Found Some Ice
Post by: Desperado on Nov 30, 2009, 07:52 PM
11/28/09 Aitkin County Minnesota shortly after sunrise.
Found some ice . . .  just not quite enough.
A 60 acre finger shaped bay.
Back half of the bay was completely frozen over.
The front half of the bay is about 60 yards wide.  There was about 20 yards of ice out from each shore with open water about 20 yard wide in the center.  Of course the open water in the center of the mouth of the bay led to open water out on the main part of the lake.

The THICKEST, clearest, and strongest ice was about 15 yards from shore and was THREE QUARTERS of an inch.

Spring Lake in Mounds View was completely skimmed over a few days ago. I think the water temps are right on the edge, we just need a few cold nights to lock things up good.

The coming week should do the trick then. The 7-day forecast looks promising. This is for just south of the Metro:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25.

Wednesday Night: Cloudy, with a low around 19.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 15.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 14.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Small lakes and ponds around here are locked up every morning, it just needs to STAY cold so it can build ice.  The upcoming forecast should lock up the lakes for good.
