Title: Which scent works the best for perch?
Post by: webby139 on Mar 02, 2019, 06:09 PM: I am relatively new to ice fishing and was wondering what scents people use for perch? Does it even help? Which one is the best?

Bingo. Tungsten works. I'm partial to a small buckshot jig with waxies or maggots on all the hooks. Bounce it off the bottom on the way down and then starting 6 in to a foot off the bottom jig it like a madman. If there's perch there they'll show up quickly, then it's just your job to slow down and make em bite! Never used a scent, so I wouldn't say it's necessary.

Post by: RuralMT on Mar 03, 2019, 08:34 AM: I'm in complete agreement with the above; Pete's fire tiger tungsten jigs tipped with maggots translates to success. If I'm fishing over deeper water, say on LMR or the Thompsons, I also use a Hali jig (sorry Pete!) tipped as well. The fluttering drop seems to draw them in from a distance...no scent necessary!

Post by: mtgrant on Mar 16, 2019, 04:43 PM: This scent has served me well. I add it directly to the baited rigs. Put it on maggots, worms, and mealworms. I also use cooked white rice and add scent to it. Then chum it! The fish are full of it when I clean them and I have used rice whenn out of maggots.

Post by: TheFishingDoctor on Mar 21, 2019, 05:29 PM: Perch aren’t big on scent. Things like the size of your lure and sometimes color will be much more important. Maggots, mealworms, minnows, even perch eyes will all work.

Post by: coldcreekchris on Mar 22, 2019, 06:25 PM: I usually don't use scent..but on those days when they come up and just stare at it..sure as hell can't hurt...have used both scents mentioned prior in post..would dip maggots...the salmon one has some weird ingredient that makes it sticky..the crawfish one will definitely wash off quicker..depending on brand....as far as scent goes.. I keep a Ziploc of frozen trout eggs in freezer...dethawed and mushed up they are sticky and stinky and hold fairly well on bait..but after all these years...who knows? when the bite is hot...its hot and perch will hit a baitless color...maybe it doesn't matter as much with perch..but other species...maybe a little extra stink will help when they are tight lipped....
