Which knot?
« on: Nov 20, 2011, 10:50 PM »
This is my first year using tip ups and was wondering which knot is best to join the backing line to the leader?

A swivel tied between the main line and your leader will save you a lot of aggravation from line twist and tangles !

X2

Simple, quick and effective. I use a small snap on the end of the leader to make changing between wire quick strike pike rigs and fluoro walleye leaders easier.

Tie on a snap and swivel.  Makes changing between rigs super fast and easy.

Great site for Knots Idahogator!

I agree tie a swivel between the main tipup line and the rest. I'm big on the Trilene Knot because I have been tying it for years and it's never let me down.

Albright, blood or double uni knot should do it if you don't go with the swivel suggestion.

X 2 I actually tie a barrel swivel on the end of my dacron, then attach my fluorocarbon leader to a snap swivel that attaches to the barrel swivel...makes changing leaders a snap...

To me, using a barrel swivel is the only way.

Swivel is important, but a barrel swivel will not help with line twist, you would need a good quality Ball Bearing swivel like a Sampo to do any good with line twist...

And, as with so many other things in life, I do it backwards.....

A plain snap (no swivel) on the spool line. Each leader is made with a swivel so swapping out is easy. This allows one less piece of hardware on the rig

As for swivel quality? I'm not sure if ball bearings are necessary on tip ups; there just isn't that much twisting that goes on in my experience. I do like SPRO Power Swivels (the crane version); highly polished lack finish stainless steel, the next smoothest thing to a BB and very strong for their size.

Oh, the knot? Unis for most everything... If you don't like swivels put the Uni back-to-back.

Just my opinion based on my experience.... User mileage may vary.

Uni to uni knot if you are not using a barrel swivel. If you are using a swivel then I just use the improved.

I use a ball bearing snap on my Dacron. then swivels on premade leaders for quick change outs as needed.  ;)

I use the Palomar on my warm weather fishing gear, would that work?

And how long should my leaders be? Should they match the test weight of my backing line? Running 40# braided tip up line.

Polamer will work to connect your braided and leader to the swivel.  I snell all my own hooks when attaching hooks to the leader.

Leader strength does not have to match your braided......that will depend on what you are fishing for!  I use 35 lb braided dacron for my braid and go with 4 - 6 pound floro when targeting trout and 25 lb mono when targeting pike / bass / pickerel.

I tend to go very long with my leaders.....at least 6 foot.  Lots of opinions on that though!  Just keep in mind if you are using polar style tip ups that have to feed the line through an eye you may have to shorten that leader if fishing shallow water.........don't want to have the swivel go through the eye and get hung up!

Thanks. Do I also use a steel leader when targeting pike?

Some do and some don't!  I just go with heavy mono......25 lb test is my choice.  If I land a large toothy one I just change out the leader at the hole before resetting the tip up.  I keep pre tied leaders in a zip lock in my pocket to make the change out quick and easy.

The reason I go with mono rather than steel is I feel the mono lets the bait swim more naturally.

What do you think about tying a perfection loop in the dacron and making the loop to loop connection to a barrel swivel on a pre-made leader?

The new Indian Hills I just got from Santa (OK I got myself from The Ice Hole on Friday when there was no Ice) are to nice to leave rigged for just one species!

Always use the swivel from tip-up line (Braid) to leader (I use heavy florocarbon) and it's a Homer Circle Knot on both ends of the Spro barrel swivel...The rig has never failed!

Die hard double uni knot if not using swivels. Have landed hundreds of giant sturgeon and never had the uni fail me.
