Broken K-Drill
« on: Feb 11, 2018, 07:53 PM »
I purchased a K-Drill yesterday at a local bait shop. Went out today and after about 4 holes of about 24" of ice one of the propellers broke off. The bait shop is out of them of course. I sent K-Drill an email. Do you guys think they will replace it?
The owner of the. Sit shop thought they would. He told me to call him back if they don't and he would help me.

I'm sure they will replace it for you, would be very surprised if they don't. Keep us updated on what you hear back from them. Sorry it had to break for you!

In the meantime, you can re-stack that section and move it to the top, if it is causing problems clearing the chips.

I didn't realize they were put together in sections.  I'm sure they'll make it right just the down time waiting.

I didn't realize they were put together in sections.

Yep,  bunch of identical sections all interlocked together and stacked on a tube.

I can see at least three possible reasons for this engineering.
(A) Smaller, cheaper mold
(B) they can build any length auger they desire to build
(C) easier, cheaper repair if the flighting gets damaged in one area only

That might be why they tell you to clear the chips periodically rather than drill straight through. I bought into a K and once I used it a few times I could see how too many chips might be challenging for the plastic flights. One of the tradeoffs for reduced weight. I'm only a few weeks and a couple hundred holes in so we'll see.

The other thing that concerns me is damage during transportation whether in a truck or a sled. One tiny crack could make the whole thing break off under moderate load.

Let us know how this turns out and thanks for sharing your experience.

I really like the idea of sections.  You can make the auger any length you want.  I wish I would have bought the Artic Trekker Nils for this exact reason, my regular Nils is longer than I'll probably ever need here in Ohio.  Keep us posted on how everything works out!

Keep in mind that the sections are stacked on an inner tube.  The tube length will determine the auger length not the number of flighting sections.  The manufactor could build any length simply by altering the tube length and adjusting the number of sections used.  Not sure how easy this would be for a consumer.

Ahh gotcha, didn't think of that.  There's gotta be a way to make a fully customizable auger...hmmmm...

Replacements parts

Cheap fix it appears. I would rather them replace it since I bought it the day before and didn't even finish the first trip with it.

To speed things along for you, they may just send a new auger flight section.

I think that it what he meant.  He would rather they replace the section, than for him to buy a section, but if he did have to buy one, it was a cheap fix.

They were very friendly and fast about it.  I hope I don't screw it up putting the replacement on!

When I ordered my auger from them, the customer service was so good, it was sent before my CC was charged. I had it in 1 day.

I'm thinking at that price ($5.95 + S/H) it makes sense to have at least one section "on hand". In case of damage it should be an easy process to swap in the replacement.

I’ll bet that it was somehow cracked right from the start. I treat my k-drill like I do my flasher it rides inside my truck.

The real kicker...

An all steel Mora bit is lighter, cheaper, easier to find replacement blades, cheaper to buy replacement blades, won't break...

At 1/4 the cost...

But the Kdrill looks cool to some...

I wonder how long it'll be before somebody makes a travel/storage case for these.

as high up as the breakage was it shouldn't affect making holes. if it were lower you could bring the damage one up to the top and not ruin your day. not so sure about the cutting head tho.

if i owned one it looks like i would want a few spare parts on the ready. kind of like spoons for clearing shavings when hit and frozen.

The part arrived at my house this afternoon. About 24 hours after getting off the phone with them!

Good customer service from K-Drill!
