Removing red hooks from a fish?
« on: Nov 17, 2016, 08:54 PM »
Guys, need your help!  You know those sweet "blood" hooks on lures like the Lindy Rattlin' Flyer?  Well, I have always used hemostats to remove hooks from fish.  Using hemostats on these red hooks chips the red plating off the hooks.  What do you folks use?

Thanks,

Jim

I change the hooks for new/sharp fresh ones after a few fish or bad chipping.      ;)2

All the hooks on my jigs get swapped out with sharper, more durable hooks before they go swimming...not sure that the blood hooks make that much of a difference.

Try putting shrink tube on the jaws, I've been using for years. Has eliminated chipping jigs and lures and reduced line damage due to forceps. Use all year round.

Shrink tube is great idea or a panfish pick would work in a pinch as well.
I tried sky diving once.....went to Google Earth and zoomed in really fast

Similar to the shrink tube idea, on the recent 'Across the Ice Belt TV' show I saw them using this tool:

I saw the rubber dipped tips and thought it looked like a great modification to the basic forceps.

a lot of fly fisherman i know have started doing the shrink wrap thing to help prevent shredding their flies when unhooking a fish.

as for red hooks, i've never noticed any kind of difference as far as more or less bites, and i've also got plenty of red hooks with chipped paint that certainly haven't dissuaded many fish from biting.

if you're that worried about it, a bright red sharpie will help dull the shiny spots where the paint has chipped off.

check this thing out.  its the bees knees.  works great on the gills and saves the paint on the glo jigs and the wear and tear on the red hooks.

Some red hooks are stained some are painted. A while back I picked up some stains at Fleet Farm called Renew Allure.  They sell colors individually, or in sets.  These stains work great on nickel plated lures, including hooks and spoons.  It holds up really well. I've also used them for other things besides lures. I have a couple collectable red Abu Garcia feels that were chipped/worn in a couple places and the stain blended in perfectly.  These are real stains and will stain your clothing and won't wash off your hands with soap and water, so be careful. They dry pretty quick too. For some of my musky lures, instead of buying red replacement hooks, I just stain them. I take them off first and hold by the eye while brushing on the stain and hang them from a wire through the eye to dry.

Well, looks like they're out of business, www.renewallure.com, is no more.  I saw a few remaining bottles last year in one of the FF stores and bought them all. You may run across some, but likely not red or green, the most popular.

Any way that's the fastest. I keep enough spares to change if hooks get too ugly even though "THE FISH NEVER CARES!" ...

Red is the 1st color that changes underwater, if you are fishing any deeper then 20 feet the color red will turn to black.

X2. A red permanent sharpie works ok for touchup.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
