Question about flurocarbon
« on: Feb 10, 2011, 05:39 PM »

So i set up my laker traps with 12lb fluro .Today i lost 2 fish at the hole????  they were not large fish 3 lbs or so..... Broke at the hook both times ???  Bad knot????

I used a palomar knot to tie my hooks to the leader  :( >:(               so it fluro not good when cold or knot sensitive or what????

Think i'll go back to either mono or spider
i ain't scared

I have always been a fan of the improved clinch knot. I also prefer mono over flurocarbon.

I find this to be very important when i tie knots with flouro. Sometimes it will even break when i cinch the knot if i don't lube it up first.

I use floro and both the improved clinch and palamor knots to connect to hooks/swivels, had a knot fail me once, but was just a bad knot.  Just wet before you cinch down an I would think you would be fine???

a little spit goes a long way tony! and when you tighten your knot,  do it slowly because friction causes heat and its bad with flouro

You need to check the very end of the knot when done tying I always used have a small strecth area that look like it was weaker started using chap stick as lube on knot not a problem anymore what type of flouro you using

tc, have no clue where you purchased the line; But if it has been sitting on a shelve in a shop that doesn't sell much line, it could have been exposed to light/ heat etc.for too long a period & might not be serviceable anymore.????     Just a thought,    LL

I switched from seaguar carbon pro to seaguar invizx this year and had the same problems you describe.  I even had 2 traps where the flag never went up, and the hook was gone.  (my traps are in good working order)  I use the improved clinch knot almost exclusively.  Needless to say I went back to the old carbon pro.

I think billditrite is onto something regarding the heat and friction
Also the seaguar website uses a improved clinch

I had problems with the vanish... some would be good, some bad. Even on the same spool.

Try Segar or one of the other premium lines...

I also use vanish for ice fishing and heavier seaguar line for stripers.  I strictly use uni knots. Haven't failed me yet. Lick em good. :P

I swear by Vanish and Canjun, I snell my hook also. I also like to fish with 6# to 8# test. Spit will keep the line getting brittle from the heat.

I have had bad luck with vanish. Stuff is horrible. I use a premium line like seagar or p-line.
You know how the old saying goes...You get what you pay for...
I also remember reading a thread not long ago that mentioned using chap stick to lube the knot before cinching is supposed to work pretty good. have yet to try it though

i use vanish on everything.  i have never had a problem with it.  BUT you have to wet the line and knot before you chinch it and tighten it slowly.  i have found the chew spit works the best  ;D

Also it take the soreness out of the fish's lip when you use chap stick.
