I went by Burtis Bay yesterday around 1:30.  There wasn't anyone out there.  You could see where people were checking the ice, but no one had ventured more than a couple hundred feet off shore.

I went by Burtis, Lakewood Bar, Prendergast, and Mayville this morning.  It was spur of the moment so I didn't bring gear to check the ice.  No one was out and the only place that looked like the ice was checked was Burtis.  All of the other places looked sketchy.

mostly small. 7"-9". There were days we caught 100. Kept none. Hoping this winter they'll have some size to em.

We can usually limit out in a few hours on 9 and 10 inch fish. Once we do that we head over for crappie and eyes. Not uncommon to limit out on all three within a day. Just need to know where to go, and I never go without my propane crockpot filled with delicious chowder or venison with a nice red wine reduction.

Last year I heard about people catching perch off of the bell tower by the institution, where is the easiest access point?   Does the institution allow any access points for the public?

The Institute gate is not manned in winter so you can drive right in. Tought to explain how to get there once inside. Just keep heading east and you'll hit the water eventually. Only three parking spaces at the tower then the rest have to park along the roads. Please be mindful that this is private property. People have left ruts and trash in the past which won't help keep it accessible to us fisherman.

I've fished all over the lake the last nine years.  I believe you about the fish; they're out there.
All I ever smell outside peoples' huts is beer, piss, and pot smoke! I think the whole chowder thing's a ruse!

i fished Lakewood and towards Asheville myself and sat on 6-8" of clear black ice all day. Fishing was slow. Did notice a few guys off Long Poin,t but close to shore, and off Bemis Point later on when I went for a ride. Anywhere north of LP is bad ice. Even noticed some water in some spots, so I would steer clear of anywhere north of LP for another week maybe two.

Was planning on going to check out the lake but woke up to rain. Burtis bay cam looks bad, almost like open water at a quick glance. Anyone have eyes on the lake today after this rain? Hope ing the degradation isn't happening too fast
