I caught around 60 perch in open water on Thursday.  Burtis was frozen then, with ice from the bridge to the south end.  By Saturday, I would expect there to be at least 3 in. of ice on Burtis. The snow on the ice is not deep enough to insulate completely.  Just keep your own weight in mind and dont venture too far out.  The gills are waiting, but there isn't a bluegill worth a rescue or your own life

I am going to go down to the lake and poke around tomorrow , Burtis I bet will be ok. My question is where can i get waxies, spikes, or any other bait? I called hogan's they have rosies and shiners the hooker isn't opening until Saturday, and millers in Silver Creek has only  emeralds. Anyone know of anywhere to get grubs?  I plan on buying my normal year supply when available, but for now I'd be happy with a couple dozen.

I will be headed to burtis in the a.m gonna stop at cassadega and check that out first.went to gander mountain earlier and got shiners but they said waxies, spikes, maggots, mousies etc.. will not be in till friday. Dicks sporting goods at walden galleria has wax worms picked up a 100 for around 4 bucks.will report ice conditions and fishing report tomorrow afternoon

I live in cassadaga, be very careful the lake closest to 60 was wide open 2 days ago. The lake nearest Lily Dale has been locked up the longest, but these lakes freeze funny let me know what you find. If you make it to burtis I'll be the guy using a spud to make holes probably rolling solo. I am not in Buffalo so I will check lakewood wal-mart for my bait if they have none I will use my plastics and minnows that are available. Good luck and stay dry

I think they have been closed for a while now the message on their phone says they reopen on Saturday the fifth, and then they will be open full and normal winter hours.

The hooker is for sale and has been for close to a year.  Last I heard they wanted 140 for everything. Shop, house, pond, inventory...I hope if it does sell it remains a bait/tackle shop.  Its a really nice chunk of property either way.  I've tried to convince my wife to quit her job and work the shop if I bought it.  She said we'd have to change the name!
Good luck with your grub hunt Marcus.  I stocked up at grizzly garys on sat.  I'm surprised hogans doesn't have any in yet
I'm going to give burtis another try after work tomrw or friday.  Maybe stick around after dark if the wind isn't too bad.

Did anyone fish Burtis today with any success?  How thick is the ice?  Were you able to get out to where the gills shooled up last year?

Good thing for spell checks.  I'll try that again.  Did anyone fish Burtis today with any success?  How thick is the ice?  Were you able to get out far enough to where the bluegills schooled last season?

I think the lack of quality ice last year has got me especially psyched up this year! Really can't wait. Good luck everybody.

I doubt a couple days with daytime highs (2-3 hours in winter max) near 40 will eat up the ice in Burtis , however the Gale winds blowing are going to eat up any of the ice in the north end today. I hit burtis at first light today no fish (I am still working with plastics though no waxies in the area it seems) only stayed for 2 hours, god damn windy out there. still about 3 " of ice , but a little more snow and some slush on top. Use a spud we found a spot where 1 whack went right through and people were beyond there yesterday. 10 feet off of launch at Long Point had 1.5-2" black ice but got thinner real fast not fishable. Checked some local waters one pond had 4.5" mixed black/white ice at shore and 20 feet away put the spud through with no force, very happy I had it with me. Be careful things change step by step. Gonna go out again when the winds let up.

I'm sure you know what you are doing, but I was there and it seemed 'creepier' today than yesterday . I am gonna go in the morning for sure, treading light with my spud and ice picks.

Just a FYI on bait.  Millers in Silver Creek had spikes, and Lee Webers had grubs today.  Good and lively!

There are alot of guys fishing in the south end, I was alone and pressed for time so I didn't make it out to the group. I was finding 2-3" with some spots even a bit under 2". The slush on top is hardening which will make me feel better. I have not checked in Mayville, but I know most of the north is wide open with whitecaps. I am gonna try for some toothy critters much closer to home. Happy Hooker is open and has bait, just so you know.

Was there today. Fishing was pretty much non existing till when we left at 2:00. Try again tomorrow afternoon. Black ice was only about 1 1/2 inches. Probably punched 80 holes and dropping the micro view down and never saw a fish. Nice to be out though.
