Closed cell foam sleeping pads would be my first thought.

I've had foam ones, carpet samples, plywood squares and the best so far has been a piece of black rubber. Mine are cut from a blown inner tube I picked up off the highway. Got the idea from some tippys that were marketed some time ago with a flexible black rubber thing built right in... folded up like a taco.

My experience is they take up almost zero space, trap the heat from the water well to resist freezing, seal out wind and snow, don't snag on hooks or anything else and don't tear or freeze down. Rubber roofing scraps have also worked but the inner tube is a little heavier. Pretty much free to check out.

'Had on hand some semi rigid plastic cardboard type material [1/4" thick corrigated stuff]. cut up some into 12" squares with a slit down the middle--worked great ; weighs nothing. 'wish I knew where it came from--probably a furniture wrap..

And- no cost...

I had some extra carpet laying around so I cut 12" squares with a slit. The closed cell foam is a great idea though, I never thought of that.

we made our hole covers from 1/2 inch plywood and gorilla glued the sleeping pad to them after they were cut out in 14" circles of coarse and then painted them black. just drill the hole in the middle and cut a slot out b4 you glue the pad on. these are bullet proof and heavy enough thi wind wont blow them away.

My buddy worked in a truck tractor shop, he started saving jacked up mud flaps and cut them into 12" squares, sliced line to the center and punched a hole in them.  He got me thinking about getting covers for mine.  So I started noticing some in ditches and road sides, so I started picking them up, got enough for 6 nice covers now.  They store easy and he's had them out for 12 hours in sub zero temps with no freeze ups.

The previous poster who said to use bucket lids was right on target. Take a jig saw and cut a slot in it. I then paint mine black with spray paint. The only cost is the paint. Plus they dont blow away as easy as the foam kind. ::)

Granted if one of my foam sleeping bag pad covers gets away from me on the ice on a windy day, it`ll be a long walk to recover, but I don`t have problems with them taking off once set in place . Top 2 pictures are from a real windy day a couple of seasons ago. If you didn`t use hole covers of some kind , the holes would fill in , in no time.

I use hole covers for my polars , my windlass and my RodholderRig

Ifya look at either the Windlass or the RodHolderRig, you will see a plastic tube. I thread these on the line before any terminal tackle , then set it up . 1 Drop of mineral oil swished around the interior of the tube with a Q-tip keeps the line from freezing in place. (Please , don`t whine about contamination/pollution etc, you can ingest this stuff, it is actually a treatment for being backed up!) Believe I picked up this trick from an InFishermen read, not sure.

I found an old roll of 1/8" thick black rubber kicking around at work and I just cut about 8 12"X12" squares out of it. Punched a hole in a corner on each of them and cut slits to the center and then cut a 3/4"X3/4" square out of the center. The holes on the corners are for a carabiner clip so I can keep them together and clip them to my sled.

I bought a horse trailer rubber mat for $35. Cut it into squares with a sawzawl. Took a 3/4in drill bit to put a hole in the middle of the mat, sawed up to the hole. They are heavy but are indestructible and have drain grooves on the underside.

I've been thinking about this for awhile... Lowe's or Home Depot sells anti-fatigue foam mat runners.  You can by it by the linear foot.  I used to work at Lowes and Home Depot in the flooring dept and I remember it being pretty cheap...and if you can get the "remnants," the last few feet on the roll they sell it really cheap to get rid of it... the mat is like an inch thick too so it's about the same thickness as the manufactured hole covers.  They came in dark grat and I think they had black too.
