Attaching the switch for a cheap tip up light?
« on: Jan 31, 2011, 07:19 PM »
I picked up a bunch of 'closet lights' for a buck a piece. It'll be a cinch to put them on my jigging buddy and celsius tip up but I'm having some trouble attaching the switch part to my traditional '3-stick' tip ups. Right now I have two zip ties tying the magnet switch to the flag shaft, it works in the test run but I know on the ice any wind will trip the light. Here's a link to my tip up and light:

Any suggestions to improve this set up?

Velcro,

I'd try electrical tape.  The magnet switch will still work even with the magnet wrapped in tape.  You can wrap electrical tape a lot tighter than duct tape which is why I suggest it over duct.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the drawer lights?  I'm in the Norwich area and want to try these for myself.

Tight lines.

Dollar Tree, if they don't have the closet lights they usually carry the door alarms which you can wire LED lights to. I bought all the lights I could find in the Putnam Dollar Tree.

Maybe some tape can keep the magnet from getting blown aside.

Thanks for the info.  There is one in Norwich and Groton, I'll have to check for the lights.

After watching the video of your DIY light again, I think the trick will be to tape the magnet to the flag shaft and mount the actual light in such a way that when the flag is set the magnet/light are in contact with each other.  Let us know how you make out, and I'll keep thinking of ways I'd do it.

Yeah, I've done a lot of fiddling with that tip up, lots of flags in the face lol. My jigging buddy and celsius tip ups were easy to rig up but the traditional ones are more difficult. Might resort to bells, lots of reflective tape and hitting it with a flashlight beam.

Well I checked Groton Dollar tree on my way home last night.  Didn't have the lights and never heard of them.  I guess I'll try Norwich next and then might have to make a trip to Putnam.

They don't always carry them, which kinda sucks. Don't even have them on their website for ordering. I saw them at the Killingly Dollar Tree over the summer, when I came back late fall they were gone.
