Attaching new flags to old tip ups?
« on: Nov 18, 2010, 01:38 PM »
Looks like I have to make my tip ups last one more year. I have a dozen 40up tip ups that I want to change the flags on. What do you guys use to secure your new flags to the trap?

Oh yeah, here's the new flags....

i took sheet metal and cut rectangles out of it and bent them in half and took gorilla glue and placed some inside and on the flag and then put the sheet metal in a vice and clamped down the sheet metal onto the flag and the flag pole wire (it was the flat spring metal one) and left it for about 2 or 3 hours atleast, usually over night. I would usually do 1 a night. Worked perfectly. They are still holding on tight.

I can take some picture of how it came out if you want and explain it better too if you need. It looked pretty good.

conact cement works great. put some on the spring and on about a inch wide down the edge of the flag. let dry for 10min. then pinch on over flag spring making sure it overlaps to the cemented strip on the other side. once the 2 sides touch each other itll never come off.

I used crazy glue,  took 2 small thin pieces of wood just a bit longer than the flag, put glue on the flag then wrapped the flag around the metal pole, 2 pieces of wood to pinch the flag together and held the wood with vise grips for a hour or so.

Goop.  Works great for everything and have previpously used it on my flags with out a problem.

I popped a hole in the new flag with a hole punch, and tye-wrapped it in place.  Replaced all my old crappy flags that way.

For flannel flags fabric glue works excellent.   I use 3 small dots of crazy glue along the pole and a liberal amount of fabric glue all along the edges of the fold over. Works great.

The flags on my tipups (the old wooden style) are tiny when I buy them. I dug through my hunting pack and got my flagging tape, which is blaze orange. I tied three lengths of tape around the base of the old flag, all at different angles, about 8 inches long. I know it's not pretty but when one of those flags goes up you can see it from a ways away, and It didn't cost me much at all. $2.50 per tip-up and maybe 25 cents worth of tape. Caught a pike on one yesterday!
