Had by far my best luck with a lighted strobe style soft body jig about 2 oz. fishing down to at least 120 ft.

I use a Berkley Gulp 4 inch smelt smothered in smelt oil. I've grabbed my jig body off the ice after landing a fish and it turned out to be a real smelt - that's how natural they look.
