Homemade jaw jacker conversion
« on: Jan 13, 2020, 07:08 PM »
I built some auto hook setters a few years back, not really my cup of tea. They work great for trout, but I really wanted to figure out how to use them as a tip up to catch walleyes. I stumbled across the Finicky Fooler when looking at ifish pros and decided to "reverse engineer" it and add a trigger and flag to my jacker rig. I can run these either as a jacker, a tip up, or a jacker with a flag. Turned out well, and added about 2$ to each of my 4$ homemade jackers

Thanks for posting the closeup pictures.  Not that I'm looking to rip off your idea, or anything...

be careful not to wack yourself in the face building those things. I had a few close calls inside while working on the trigger when I built one.

Nice ideas. I too am uninterested in auto-hookset rigs but prefer playing fish on a rod so I picked up a couple of the HT Ice Riggers. They improved their newer model by making the angle of the rod holder adjustable (to simplify using rods of a variety of lengths) but in the process made the diameter of the holder so small it prevents the use of all but the smallest handled rods. Weird. But your trigger design has inspired me to modify the biggest failure of the HT. Finding the sweet spot for placing the line in their coated alligator clip is aggravating even on a warm day. I like the simplicity of your bare wire trigger.

YOU are the only one who can decide if the ice is safe enough for you.

I based my design off if the finicky fooler they have really good reviews when compared to the ifish pros, ice riggers or clams Arctic warrior. It is super simple. The biggest build issue is getting the trigger perfectly lined up with the clip on the flag. Especially when your trying to repeat results on 5 setups!
